chrisfox Posted 22 July 2009 Posted 22 July 2009 Sorry pal I wasn't laughing at your expense its just a wounder when you see a better deal.Happened to me when I got me sky + box I bought it for £100 and a few months later they were giving them out free. To be fair though you have gone the right way about it. Sky over Virgin media any day of the week. Never thought you were laughing at my expense. If I was starting from scratch I'd probably go for Sky Broadband/TV package.
Matt Posted 22 July 2009 Posted 22 July 2009 Perhaps you could say who it's with so we can avoid it I think most people avoid them anyway, AOL, Most people don't have a good word to say about them. Weve got Sky... have the telephone and TV too (I know, dont hate me! ) we pay a tenner a month but have the fastest one they offer (dont know what it is though ) have had no problems with connection/speed etc dont have to pay any extras. Very happy. AOL are the shitest bunch of money grabbing conning useless dumb ****s Ive ever had the misfortune to deal with and were bloody expensive. I wouldnt touch them with a bargepole. Uh-Huh, I'm in the middle of a contract, that seems to have been going forever though. That's a No on recommending AOL then?
Alexikokopops Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 Nah, not really bothered to be honest.Had NTL/Virgin internet since it first came out as the free dailup, and just upgraded as and when it's become available. (about 9 years or so now I think) dont have a landline phone, and I have SKY TV. Don't know first hand what the TV package with Virgin Media is like but I've heard it's pretty crap. All in all happy with what I've got! It's the same TV as Sky (you get the same channels), except the V+ box has three tuners instead of two (meaning you can record two things and watch a third, unlike Sky), you can get iPlayer, ITV player and 4OD through your TV and it has an extensive library of TV shows for free, plus films and music. Anyway, this is why I actually popped up to post http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8171074.stm
Bellend Sebastian Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 Do we have any Humberside Foxiles? Karoo are still taking an excitingly draconian approach to file-sharers, despite having softened their stance a bit: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8166640.stm They're plowing a relatively lone furrow at the moment, but might other ISPs follow suit? I'm thinking aloud here. I don't have a clue
ob1kanobe0 Posted 28 July 2009 Posted 28 July 2009 Uh-Huh, I'm in the middle of a contract, that seems to have been going forever though. Are you gonna hold out for a free transfer
AoWW Posted 5 August 2009 Posted 5 August 2009 Apologies Alex but Virgin Media Customer Services..... Arrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! All I wanted was a new broadband provider. A 20 minute conversation later - including lengthy 'on holds' while he 'checked things' and having to spell my (very simple) house name over 5 times (he still didn't have it right in the end, but I'd lost the will to live by that point... any correspondence would find me) - and he still hadn't told me how much is would cost me a month. Eventually I learnt it would cost more than with Sky, with a lower usage allowance and the same download speeds - oh, and the prospect of dealing with imbecilic customer support if I needed it. (A huge generalisation, I realise, but I was properly pissed off by that point). I explained I could get a better deal elsewhere but, no, he insisted on repeating, parrot-fashion, 'shall I sign you up?'. Er, you know what... no. Quite frankly I would rather stick pins in my eyes than give you my business. Sky it is!
The Padster Posted 5 August 2009 Posted 5 August 2009 Who's it with? Sky How much do you pay monthly? £5 for fastest 16Mb unlimited + £5 Tel + £18.50 for a few TV packages What's the speed like? 16Mb, getting around that but i am only 500 yds to the exchange What's the reliability like? Great never dropped out, Router overheated a few times which cut us off but solved that by putting it on included stand Are there any hidden extras? Nope Anything else that might persuade me to take them on? Nothing really, its just a good price when included with your TV n Tel Would you recommend them YES or NO. Yes That's a No on recommending AOL then? I would never ever in a googol years reccomend AOL. My mum is still with them after 9 years and i tell her everytime to get rid as its slowing her comp down no end aswell as paying for an 8Mb connection and only getting 1-2 out of it. Although worse off is my uncle who is STILL using dial-up, honest!, he has been told to upgrade to broadband ASAP coz there gonna shut off the dial-up connection soon.
Matt Posted 5 August 2009 Posted 5 August 2009 Rightio, so whats the general concencus of which is the best provider? I'm looking at Sky, Any good? AOL have totally fooked me off, My internet is slow, and when I complained last time about it, they spoke to my mum (As she pays for the account) and conned her into getting the phone through them too, Well she is on holiday, and they have cut our phone line off, when you try and make a call it goes straight through to AOL to discuss it (I can't do anything as it's my mum account and payment, they won't speak to me), Anyway I asked if they could tell me why I couldn't make outgoing calls and they said "There is a problem with payment, When we try and collect payment there is insufficient funds in you're account". Well for 1) I still have internet access, As slow as it is, I do still have internet access, and 2) The payment is through a Credit Card - A Credit Card doesn't have funds anyway, and my mum is one of those people who pays the bill the moment it drops through the letterbox. Fookin' AOL, Most people know this anyway, but do not touch them with a bargepole.
Matt Posted 5 August 2009 Posted 5 August 2009 How do you go about swapping internet providers without losing internet access (i.e - Cancel one without having to wait a couple of days without internet access while you wait for the new provider to set up) Is there like a week cooling off period? Whilst you can get a new provider set up.

Depending how much notice you have to give make sure you've got the 'bits' and the ok to go online with your new provider before you contract runs out with the old one.

Quite frankly I would rather stick pins in my eyes than give you my business. Sky it is! Just ask me in the future, it's probably easier than communicating with call centre staff! It's actually improved compared to what it was in the MTL days as well. I'm pretty sure there aren't any download limits on any of our tariffs so I don't know what he was talking about! Are you in a cable area or non-cable area do you know? Sky's actually a pretty good deal, but obviously you can only get it if you're paying through your arse for their TV too.
Matt Posted 6 August 2009 Posted 6 August 2009 Depending how much notice you have to give make sure you've got the 'bits' and the ok to go online with your new provider before you contract runs out with the old one. Looks like my contract lasts another 3 months, and will cost 70 quid to get out of so looks like i'll have to put up with shitty AOL for another 3 months. Atleast it gives me 3 months to shop around a look for the best deal and company though. Its amazing how as soon as you say your considering leaving you are transfered to an English person to discuss your contract isn't it? When they asked me why I was considering leaving I said tbh your rubbish, they didn't have much of a response to that.

I sent them a message via their OWN WEBSITE saying I was going (this brilliant system gives you no proof you've contacted them), then tried again a month later when they were chasing payment as a result of my cancelling my direct debit, by which point they naturally had applied a late payment charge. They then called me to sort it out, the bloke was fine and said he would cancel the second payment they now wanted and the late payment charge on the first, but would I be so kind to pay that when they confirmed the amount. I did just that when it came through, and they confirmed that we were all sorted and that was it. I've now just had a bill saying they want about £70 - for what isn't clear, so I tried to complain, and predictably the form on their website for submitting complaints doesn't work. I then spoke to them today to sort it out and they said I'm still getting charged because I'm not disconnected yet, and should wait for my final bill. I said I didn't give a toss about the final bill because I'd already been told I don't owe them anything, but if it shows I do I should 'take it up with them then'. Life's too short. I hope Branson's balloon crashes in a massive fireball. Is he even anything to do with them anymore? If not, sorry Rich

If not, sorry Rich Company's like these use scare tactics to put fear in people's minds to make them pay up. All you have to do is keep telling them you aint paying, write "return to sender" on any letter they send you and put it in a letter box. In time they'll get the message and wont bother with you anymore. What these company's do is follow up on the one's they believe will give-in most. Its a little bit like the licence fee, under the european human rights law, it is unconstitutional for the BBC to charge someone to recieve free information. So long as you don't open your door to their inspectors, and don't tell them you've got a tv, video, mobile phone, internet connection or any other tv recieving contraption, then they can't take money off you, no matter how threatening a letter to you sounds.

Alexikokopops Posted 7 August 2009 Posted 7 August 2009 Seems like Virgin are in fact, shit.
Shrenchel Posted 7 August 2009 Posted 7 August 2009 Seems like Virgin are in fact, shit. I'm starting to agree. Their customer service is the worst I've ever experienced from a company. So much hassle. I'd be better off asking the tramps that drink super tenants and do brown behind the supermarket near my house what they think.

Alexikokopops Posted 7 August 2009 Posted 7 August 2009 Alright. When are they actually coming round to install the stuff that they were supposed to do on Monday? Don't get me started on that. I moved house and they weren't sure if we could get cable so they sent a "spotter" round so we wouldn't have to spend two weeks waiting for an install to be told that we couldn't get it. After three weeks (which included two visits to our house, and him wandering around the street going "hmmm, this could be cable") he came to the conclusion that he wasn't sure and booked an install anyway. Two weeks later the engineer who came to install it told us straight away we couldn't get it. What the hell was the point in sending a "spotter" round?! It just wasted three weeks!!! Joker! Now we've gone with Sky and it's taking them over two weeks to install TV and five weeks to sort out broadband. Why is every company so useless?
Shrenchel Posted 7 August 2009 Posted 7 August 2009 Yeah it's ridiculous. I'd probably rather they just told me straight away that they have no idea and he'll probably turn up eventually rather than making me speak to about 4 people before one of them pretends he's definitely coming tomorrow.

Customer service is improving. It's one of the things we're concentrating on because we know it's still shit from NTL days. It can still be a bit of a joke at times though.
Shrenchel Posted 7 August 2009 Posted 7 August 2009 Ah the New Labour excuse. Surely it's been Virgin for 2 or 3 years now? How long does it take to train up some people to the point where they actually know what they're talking about, no more than 2 or 3 months?! To be honest it seems like it's getting worse. When we had it in my old house in 07/08, the Indian people were much more willing to transfer you to Britain and the British people weren't nearly so fooking stupid.

And I'm sticking by it It's been two years but the out sourced call centres (in Britain and India) are a legacy of contracts signed during NTL days. It is actually improving (in house at least), a lot of work is done on checking that.
