It would appear that your rivals could pip you to automatic promotion by virtue of alphabetical precedence. The tables produced by both these despicable media outlets clearly denote your position as a play off berth.

A tactical name change to say er... 'Arkan's Heroes' would quickly nail this nonsense.

If this is how the table would look at the end of the season, I'm almost certain the FL would be forced to set up a playoff between the tied teams before the promotion playoffs began (my guess would be a one game playoff at a neutral site). If two teams are tied in everything but the tie affects neither promotion, playoffs nor relegation, then the teams would be placed by alphabetical order.

I can't find anything from the Football League to confirm this, but Sporting Life seems to insist this is the procedure that would be used in such an unlikely finish.

Doesn't it then go down to the two games played between the two tied teams, and the aggregate winner from the two of them wins it?

It says at the bottom of the Sporting Life page.

"If two or more teams are level before the end of the season on points, goal difference and goals scored, then alphabetical order will determine the team finishing higher."

So there would be no play-off.

Nope....

Method of Determining League Positions

·At the end of each Season the Club in each Division scoring the highest number of points shall be declared the Champion Club of that Division. Three points shall be awarded for each League Match won. One point will be awarded to each Club for a drawn match. If two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points their position in the Division shall be determined on goal difference, that is to say, the difference between the total number of goals scored by and against a Club in League Matches in that Season, and the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club with the highest goal difference. If any two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points and have the same goal difference the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club having scored the most goals in League Matches in that Season.

·If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground. These provisions shall determine the ranking of Clubs in their respective Divisions.

Operative word there being BEFORE the end of the season, surely?

by the looks of it. be harsh if they missed out on the title or got relegated due to the alphabet though.

I wouldn't get too carried away with winning our first game, Charlton beat Swansea on the first day last season - and we all know what happened to them. Things can soon change, hopefully we'll be going upwards rather than downwards!

Did you ignore my post?

Here it is again.

Let's see where we are after the Derby match (Oct 17) after 12 matches and after

Sheffield United (Dec 26) 24 maqtches roughly a quarter and halfway through the season.

It will give a better picture as to how we and the other teams are doing.

It is plain idiotoc putting out tables after just even three matches let alone one.

bit more than that, sheff U at home is first game of the second half of the season, if we are still in the position we are know then we can be optomistic of a good season, if not the we can still be hopeful of doing a palace (03-04 season).
