Thrac, Yann was on the bench for the home game before Posh. I forgot who We played though!

Barnsley?

He got a few minutes against Preston in the cup too

If there is one thing that the team has this season, for me, it's depth. Up front we've got Yann, Fryatt, Howard, Gallacher and Waghorn. Last season if we lost Fryatt or Howard we were generally right in it, but this season, even though they haven't scored 10 each yet, we have a lot more depth and options.

season.

true, but it's not like this strength in depth is being used...

personally, i'd like to see if yann or gally can do what howard does, but offer something in addition - gallagher is apparently a more natural finisher than howard, and yann can supposedly hit a decent ball from set pieces, something we have been missing for yonks.

Yann didn't play versus Barnsley

That's why he'd said on the bench

Yann obviously ain't that good, otherwise Pearson would've gave him some time on the pitch, apart from 10 mins against Preston in the cup

Basically some people have relatively low expectations and others believe our team can compete with the best in our League if we go about it right. I'm in the latter camp.

Oh ffs. The world is so black and white for you isn't it? If you don't moan about a draw then you automatically have low expectations. Sorry but it doesn't work that way. Some people actually realise that football isn't played on paper and you don't win matches theorising on the internet and posting essays on messageboards. But then again you seem to think we should be winning every game and tearing up the league with your textbook brand of football.

c) Few would argue that we have some good defenders but that's as far as they operate. As attackers so far, they've posed virtually no threat at all and I've mentioned before how wrong it is not to consider defenders as an important part part of the attack when we have the ball.

Yeah, I forgot, we should have the likes of Lothar Matthaus and Ronald Koeman in defence, who can stroll out of defence with the ball, play a few one-twos with the midfielders and smash the ball in from 25 yards.

The only time defenders should be scoring goals is from set pieces. Granted, our defenders don't do that, but then how many do? In the Premiership, only a handful of defenders score goals. Vidic, Gallas, Lescott, Turner are the only ones that spring to mind. John Terry doesn't score much any more, Rio hardly ever scores, Carragher scores one in a blue moon, and the same goes for most of the best defenders in the league. For defenders to score goals is a bonus, not a prerequisite.

a) Our team can perform far better than it is right now. It just irritates you when I say so. But probably doesn't when Hobbs says we should be collecting more points away from home and Oakley says others should be taking some of the goalscoring weight off Fryatt. Why you should attack me for making those same points earlier than the media I don't know! I thought it was good to hear it here first. :D

b) I wasn't just talking about scoring goals but making them and helping to make them as well. But on the broader point of course there are not enough attacking defenders. I've been saying we have the wrong approach to developing defenders for ages. And we forever compromise on the type of defenders we select as a result. Doesn't mean we should carry on making the same mistake. And even if no-one else does it that doesn't mean we should start our own trend. Are you saying there's merit in being a follower rather than a leader?

it's not about moaninng or not moaning about a draw - it's about being able to make observations in this thread about how we could actually be doing better than we are, and not being accused of being negative if you do.

As thrac says it's not as, ahem, black and white as defenders scoring goals, it's about them helping to create goals by playing sensible passing football and supporting the midfield - let us not forget how poor we were in that department when we were relegated
