baseball 2009 World Series

Token thread about a sort-of-important world sporting event that will likely generate zero discussion. But here we go, anyway.

New York Yankees vs. Philadelphia Phillies. These cities don't like each other much; New Yorkers think Philadelphia is a disgusting hellhole populated by Neanderthals while Philadelphians think about robbing people and throwing feces at each other.

If baseball's not your thing, though, maybe we can discuss... err... I don't know... maybe talk about how Alex Rodriguez is banging that chick from Bride Wars (no, not Anne Hathaway, the other one).

I will certainly be watching on ESPN tonight.

Come on the yankees :).

Still have the memory of watching them as a kid in 2000. Brilliant occasion.

Oh and ARod and kate hudson right??

My post-game analysis of Game One (Phillies 6, Yankees 1) involves begrudging respect for Phillies lefty Cliff Lee's dominating performance--plus more ways that I can figure out how to bring A-Rod's girlfriend Kate Hudson's Bride Wars co-star Anne Hathaway into the discussion in order to forget about Cliff Lee's dominating performance. Lee held the Yankees to just 6 hits, with five of them singles; and speaking of singles, did you know that Anne Hathaway is, coincidentally, single?

Shouldn't this be renamed the Anne Hathaway thread?

I think a lot in this series depends on how well the Yankees starting pitchers can back up CC. Have the Yankees got enough depth beyond AJ Burnett and Pettitte? It must be a slight concern for the Yankees that they lost last night with Sabathia pitching. But, the Yankees batting lineup can destroy any pitcher, so a lot will depend on how Hamels copes with the pressure.

The worrying thing for the Yankees is that the Phillies seem stronger than the team who won it last year. The additions of Lee and Ibanez were huge, and if Martinez can pitch like he did against the Dodgers, the Phillies starting rotation seems very strong. But the Yankees are probably a better team than the Rays were last year. The Yankees have an incredible batting lineup and if A-Rod and Teixiera can produce (along with contributions from Jeter, Damon, Matsui and Cano), they could be lethal.

As a massive Red Sox fan, I will of course be cheering on the Phillies, but I think this could go all the way.

Just watching the recording of the game

Loved the touch of using Kasabian's fire when coming back from the adverts!

From a selfish point of view, I hope all the games finish quickly, because the hours on my Freeview box mean the channel closes at 4... i'd be annoyed if it cut out the rest of the match!

My brother loves the Braves. He has tried to explain this sport to me several times, but I just don't get it.

Sorry Jordan. :(

It's like cricket, but not as good.

Although I've actually got quite into MLB over the summer.

From what I have seen, it's nothing like cricket. Perhaps this is my problem.

If both teams use four starters this series, the Phillies would have an advantage. Joe Blanton would be Philadelphia's fourth starter (and they have J.A. Happ as well if something unforseen shakes up their rotation) The hefty lefty did well in his only playoff appearance so far this year. The Yankees would have to use Chad Gaudin. Joba's engine has broken down this season and he's no longer an option to be the fourth starter (he's in the bullpen, where he has also been shaky).

ESPN is indicating that both Lee and Sabathia will go on three days rest for Game 4, so this could be a moot point.

Philly is in a nice situation--they've won Game 1 (against Sabathia to boot) and now have taken "home field advantage" from the Yankees. They're putting Pedro on the hill tonight, and even though Pedro has looked very good for them (and importantly, looked great against the Dodgers as you said), the numbers seem to show that Hamels is a safer bet. They'll take a chance that Pedro's experience and guile is can lead them in the Bronx, but if not, they'll have Hamels pitching Game 3 at home instead, where he might be more comfortable.

Yankees have made a couple of changes tonight--out goes the slumping Nick Swisher, with Jerry Hairston, Jr. replacing him in right field and batting seventh. But more importantly, the big bat of Jorge Posada starts on the bench in place of A.J. Burnett's "personal catcher," Jose Molina. Molina brings better defense and better rapport with the unpredictable Burnett, but I'm a little surprised Girardi is sticking with this combo because 1) it didn't work so well in Game 5 against the Angels and 2) the Yanks' lineup needs to wake up, and Molina is close to being a guaranteed out.

My brother loves the Braves. He has tried to explain this sport to me several times, but I just don't get it.

I'd say just watch them hit and run until one of the umpires calls someone out, but the umpiring has been so bad these playoffs that it's probably not a good idea :P

She deserves her own thread.

Classic.

P.S. for anyone that may care, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys will be performing "Empire State of Mind" before the game, so you can youtube that tomorrow.Yes, this whole World Series thing is quite the big deal in NY.

Thanks Jordan for starting this thread.

Both of these teams are rivals as i'm a Mets fan. But i'm going for our cross town rivals and i'm sure 100% of other Mets fans are in the same thinking.

I'll never forget growing up being the only Met fan amongst my friends. The stick i got after the shocking 2000 WS :(

New York deserves a WS again. I'd have much prefered to see a Mets ticket day parade sometime in my life span but i don't think it'll happen.

Come on Yankees.*

*I never thought i'd say that ever.

Damn channel Five, I would have watched it were Baseball still on.

I've got to see what this whole Anne Hathaway bussiness is about.

And yes, i nearly cried when it was announced Five wont be carrying baseball anymore. I used to talk to Johnny Gould via email every Sunday night :(

Good times.

Yeah, Scott, this is the worst possible WS for Mets fans--but those of you that are taking a side and aren't just rooting for every player on both teams to get injured are pulling for the Yankees. I have one friend that's a Mets fan living in Philly, so this is extra-painful for her--she is solidly behind the Yankees in this one, though like you, she might feel a little dirty inside about all that.

I feel sorry to come out as a temporary Phillies fan, Jordan. In particular, this has to do with the Yankees' dominance in the past and I'm just a sucker for "underdogs" (although being current champions, that label cannot be applied to them that easily any more).

Ideally, I'd like to see the Pirates back up on the throne, but I know how ridiculous that sounds, so I'm off "supporting" the Liberty Bell State brothers instead.

I can't tell what it is, but I can't identify with any single NY sports franchise, apart from the Islanders  to a certain extent (thanks to a mister M.Streit).

Game 3 tonight in Philly: Cole Hamels against Andy Pettitte. This throws a huge monkey wrench in Halloween party plans.

There was an old saying around the States back in the day: "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for U.S. Steel." It pains me to make the comparison, but the Yankees' following in the U.S. is similar to Manchester United's, so I understand why neutrals wouldn't take a liking to the team (though the same old Yankee hating elicits yawns from me now).

lol @ Pirates winning the Series... 17 consecutive seasons below .500... absolutely hopeless. It's crazy, though; they opened 2008 with a solid lineup, yet injuries and terrible pitching took their toll. By the middle of this season, they'd traded away all of their eight starting field position players from Opening Day '08 and now are more like an AAA team masquerading as Major Leaguers.

(and off topic... Streit is awesome, one of the best power-play defensemen in the NHL. It's just too bad he's stuck out on the Island, though they've picked it up in recent games with youngsters Tavares and Okposo leading the way).

Yankees bats wake up: 8-5 win in Game 3. With a 2-1 series lead, the Yankees are making a serious power play tonight starting C.C. on three days rest against Blanton.

The New York Yankees win Game 6, 7-3, and defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series, four games to two.

DH Hideki Matsui was named the Series MVP for his red-hot hitting and led the Yankees with a Series record-tying 6 RBI in last night's win.

New York Yankees: 27-time World Series Champions. 'Twas a long night of celebration. I'm so happy.

No parade for me... last week, I chose to take this Thursday off, and it worked out all right because I got to sleep off all of the celebrating from the night/early morning before :D
