Shakespeare: Set Pieces So Important

Recommended Posts

Foxes number two Craig Shakespeare believes that set plays could hold the key to seeing off Championship leaders Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

Defensively Leicester have been undone by set pieces twice in as many games. Cardiff's equaliser in the FA Cup Fourth Round last week came from a free kick, and on Tuesday Roberto Colace's winner at Oakwell came from a corner.

Although it is at the other end where Shakespeare believes Leicester can benefit, providing they play well in other areas of the pitch.

"In the Championship if you stay in the game, a lot can depend on set plays. You can win games as Barnsley did the other nite."

City now possess a real weapon at free kicks and corners in the form of new signing Nolberto Solano. The Peruvian midfielder is an expert in dead ball situations and Shakespeare believes the 35 year old is capable of producing when it matters most.

"You seem him in training, his delivery, his quality is there for all to see. He could just be the difference we need at the end of the game."

Yeah hopefully Solano can do something from set pieces. I seem to give up hope when we get a free-kick or corner.

Judging from that comment it sounds like he will be in the starting eleven tomorrow.

On his interview with football league weekend he says he wants to hopefully stay for another year. I'm guessing he has a 12 month contract waiting in the wings if he impresses in the next 6 months.

It baffles me.

It's been evident for weeks, if not months, that this area needs improvement.

Now, just before the Newcastle matchup, we get told the old news. Waste of space on the OS. Senseless.

Im not sure what the stats are and can only go on what I have ead and what games I have seen on the Net on satelite TV from abroad but it seems we miss the goals of a Kisnorbo or McAuley or recent years. Most teams need the centre halfs especially to help out on the goals front so lets hope that Nobbys quality helps improve the goals from the big boys. On a personal level Id like to see Fryatt and Waghorn upfront and not play Stevie H and lump the ball up to him but set peices arent just for the strikers!

It bugs me that Wayne Brown doesn't go up for free kicks/corners, we've seen it on numerous occasions this season that when the other team breaks he backpedals and looks very shakey. You've got to stick your full backs on the half way line at times like that, get your big men in the box.

Morrison is more likely to score, come to that I reckon McGivern is as well. Now if we had a couple of fast full backs I'd agree.

Half the time he's just getting his head to the ball without worrying about the direction it'll go afterwards. lol

Edit, Actually far more than half the time.

That's why having Gilbert last year was a huge advantage, he may have not been the most talented player, but having him and Dyer/Gradel back defending when there was a set piece gave safety in pace.
