The Equality Bill

The Equality Bill was brought in to ensure there was no discrimination against, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, age etc etc. It even covered those who have friends or 'stand up' for others who are a 'minority'.

Recently a man won a case for discrimination on the grounds of his political belief. He was an environmentalist and believes he was sacked from work for his beliefs on global warming. Since then the floodgates have opened.

The latest list of items you can be discriminated against for are:-

Feng Shui believers who shun the number four in meeting rooms/desk numbers.

Vegans demanding a separate fridge/non-leather chairs.

A pacifist who will not deal with a client involved in weapons manufacturing.

An environmentalist demanding time off to attend a protest march, under a company policy that allows absence for important religious events.

However, the government has ruled out affording those who declare themselves 'Jedi' as having protection.

Having declared myself Jedi in the last census along with 11% of the population I am angry its been excluded!

Its PC gone mad and will no doubt be another drain on public and corporate financies.

Can you think of any more? Maybe being a City fan in Nottingham?

The equality bill sums up this government perfectly. Another piece of badly thought-out legislation without thinking of the consequences.

I had to deal with a government body when a new piece of legislation came out that affected work. I asked the government body for advice on complying with the legislation as a number of clauses within the legislation were seemingly contradictory. The response i got was these problems would be ironed out through judgements. I pointed out a judgement meant a court case, which was not something I wanted. I wanted clear guidance to comply with the law, which they could not give me as the legislation was so badly drawn up. At that point I realised this was ridiculous and gace up seeking the advice.

The equality bill seems another piece of badly drawn legislation with so many pitfalls and ridiculous consequences that it will create more problems than it solves.

One person's "rights" invariably infringe someone elses "rights". For instance, the rambler who has a right to walk wherever he wants and the home-owner who has a right to some privacy in his back garden.

Ultimately, nobody has any rights other than those they are allowed by the aurthorities. Which means that some people are more equal than others.
