MPH Posted 30 April 2010 Posted 30 April 2010 Well it would be just for the sakes of it if he's included just because he's the captain, a good mix of players is ideal but first and foremost they need to be on top of their game that applies to both young and old. I just don't go with this 'put in so and so' because he's experienced. In the same way I don't go with 'he can pass his experience on' that's simple not always the case and depends on the character of the individual not their skill/experience levels. It wouldnt really be about passing his experience on.. it would be more about having people about to make the right decisions at the right moments. Yes skill and form are a part of it, but young players in form players who are in form going into a big game can fall apart under the pressure. And lets face it, very few of our players will of been in situations like what we are about to go through.. and there will of been no bigger games coming up for this club for several years..

The 'passing on' was just an added on comment. You also shouldn't assume that experience will guarantee the person doesn't fall apart. As someone who could be classed as experienced in many fields there are a few areas that I've become less comfident and assured in as I've got older, there's also the risk that the 'excitement' has gone and motivation is harder to achieve 'having done it all before'. Many young and inexperienced people are also fearless in their approach to life. So I repeat experience can be a plus but should not be assumed to provide the answer. I'll take character, form, fitness and skill levels over experience any day.
maddog Posted 30 April 2010 Posted 30 April 2010 You have so little respect for players. Your avatar read that King was an 'invisible man' for most of the past seasons. How do you feel about King now? You're a fickle little boy and your whimsical, daft and aggressive attitudes make it hard for the rest of us to tell if you are drowning or waving. Your posts have no substance, you lack integrity and that's why in turn you have so little respect. Hope you are well, N. Read this post of mine then, and then tell me i have 'so little respect for players' http://www.foxestalk.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=65158&st=60&p=1587487entry1587487 King does get on about his business quietly, sometimes invisibly each game, yes he's turned up on the scoresheet in recent games, the avatar wasn't all insult to King, and was there long long before his recent goals. There were a lot of fans on here who also thought King was anonymous and didn't seem to do anything in a lot of games. Oakley has been poor all season, and now he's come out in the paper saying he's desperate to be fit for the playoffs, as if he's definitely in the starting 11 if he is fit. He's been awful, 0 goals, few assists, and countless wasted set pieces. I haven't been fickle this season about Oakley at all.
PAULCFC Posted 30 April 2010 Posted 30 April 2010 It's the first time in a few year's that we have a squad of player's capable of playing in not their own postition, but looking comfortable there. So if Matt is fit again it can only be a good thing......and NP has got us this far,so i for one am going to let him get on with it.

I am not sure where character has now come into it... but i would argue that Oakley has the character to get through a high pressure game... this whole conversation is of course based on Oakley's fitness, so he would have that too. the fact he is our captain and has been all season is a big thing in this... i think alot of people are underestimating the importance of a captains role in leading and galvanizing the 'troops' in those pressure moments.. having the neccesery experience CAN help in what makes someone play well ( making the right decisions, not letting the occasion get to them, ect)... and quite frankly i would much rather have someone like Oakley playing from the start in such pressure games over someone who has just a handful of first team games under their belt. football teams need their leader and captain in games like this... someone to be calling the shots, ect. i am pretty sure that Pearson will play Oakley if he is fit. Pearson is a man who clearly sticks by someone like his captain and his methods have gotten us this far .. I would of course be absolutely behind the team whoever is picked and would be more than happy to eat any humble pie coming my way if spearing plays and plays well too!!!

Character is all about the attributes that make up an individual their disposition, emotions, frame of mind, mettle, mood, personality, spirit, and temperament to name but a few. In fact those things that you describe as being important attributes of a captain. Unfortunately I've seen very little evidence of Oakley doing any of that leastwise not on the pitch. Don't misunderstand me I was very impressed and pleased with his signing based on his reputation but he's been a major disappointment and has in most games failed to deliver both as a player and as a captain. He does however seem to have been carrying injuries both in our relegation season and now we hear this season, that being the case and if it's contributed to his underperforming fair enough and I can understand Pearson playing him because for quite some time he had no real alternatives. But now that we do have some then he should only be considered if he can prove that not only is he back to full fitness but has regained some form. Just as you say experience is important in these high pressure games then form and fitness are even more so. If he is picked he will of course have my full support.

I think the post directly underneath your 'March 13th day of triumph' link when you wrote something nearly worth reading closes my argument nicely. Let's have more March the 13th and less slating tripe.

I think the post directly underneath your 'March 13th day of triumph' link when you wrote something nearly worth reading closes my argument nicely. Let's have more March the 13th and less slating tripe. Well if Oakley had done something of note this season i would praise him. But an experienced midfielder like him should be scoring some goals at least, or setting a lot up and he's done neither this season. And the fact he's been captain makes it worse, he should be charging around the pitch week in week out, score some goals and set some up. He's looked casual and lazy at times and when you've gone that long without a goal from midfield you should at least be trying your heart out. Maybe he is but i haven't seen it this season. The combination of the appeared lack of effort, the 0 goals, the crap passes and shocking crosses, awful. He should be the one setting the example to the others as captain, but it's been the other way around. And this guy was in the PL regularly not long ago, he scored a few for Derby when they were shocking in that relegation season. I would love to know the figure of how many misplaced passes and wasted set pieces he has done this season, it would be ridiculously high. And this from one of our most experienced, former PL player, it's just so poor.
Ozwin Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Spearing makes him look sub par, I never like bashing our own players though.
caz05 Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Who was a mardy bum walking round today then? Well he wasnt when he came out after the game,he stood chatting and signing autographs for fans,he looked ok then
