Alan Hansen just prounced Xavi's name wrong and said "Kid's will want to be like chavvy" fail.

He's a monumental cunt. The lack of respect shown to Holland disgusted me, and I'm not even a Dutchman.

I'm not a great Howard Webb fan but I actually felt quite sorry for him with both teams doing there utmost to get/have players sent off. A terrible advert for football. By rights he could have easily sent off 4/5 players but if he had done he'd have got a right damning.

He was on a hiding to nothing. Both football federations should be thoroughly ashamed of their respective teams.

Agreed, and Alan Shearer aswell was showing how much they were Spain sycophants, can't imagine that ITV was much better, but Hansen and Shearer ruined my viewing with them trying to ram Spain's "brilliance" down my throat.

Did they deserve much respect tonight?

What made me laugh is that they were praising the Dutch for their style of play at half time and full time, saying they were doing the right thing getting in the Spanish faces. Then at the end of extra time after the Spanish had won, it was all praise for Spain and damning the Dutch for their in you face style.

Well there was nothing to commend the Dutch for, sad because I wanted them to win

Just to quash the myth of Spain's 'brilliance' at this World Cup, they're the lowest scorers ever to lift the trophy with eight goals scored. That's three less than England in 1966, who played one less game than Spain, and Brazil in 1994, who were slaughtered at home for their lack of goalscoring threat. They may retain the ball well but those who compare them to the greatest ever international sides ever to play the game are so far of the mark it's unreal.

Fantastic match, enjoyed it thoroughly. Football wasn't great at times but Spain kept playing their excellent football regardless and deservedly got the goal to win.

Holland were filthy. Terrible play by them throughout and they didn't deserve to even get to go to extra time. I agreed wholeheartedly with Hansen and Shearer who said it like it is!

Best team throughout the tournament and on the night won the cup and it was a very good advert for football that a team who actually play football won in the end!!! :scarf::trumpet:

To be honest, what means are there to stop the Spaniards from controlling the game with their passing skills?

There's only one strategy that works (that is, if you believe in what Switzerland did when they beat the World Champions in the group stages):

Frustrate the hell out of them. Kick them in their teeth.

So, what else could Webb do than to dish out those yellows? Congratulate both squads on their excellent skills display?

On one hand, you could blame it on the length of the tournament again. Both teams were as crooked and weary and the lack of energy did not promise a very exciting match of football even before kick-off.

So, it all boiled down to grinding out a result or having the longer-lasting breath.

There were a few chances on both sides to seal a win during the first 90 minutes. But then again, "few" as in "few".

A shocking advert for the sport in general and it'll go down as the most somniferous match of international football in the past 20 years - and I thought the first two rounds in the group stages had already been horrid.

I'm glad it didn't go to penalties. However, Iniesta should've been booked as well - I know he's small and all, but to dive and to insist on Dutch players getting booked for nothing is nothing short of shameful.

Next final with some different teams, a more entertaining game and - above all - more goals. Please. Even if it means Brazil or Germany to win.ph34r.gif

We could have done with a lot less theatrical over play on the fouls, hardly a good advert.

As much as that'd be nice, everyone knows that's never going to happen... it's a part of football now and all teams do it. Some more than most, but for the simple fact that Spain play some utterly brilliant, free flowing, passing football, they deserved to win and it was a good advert for the game that they, not some useless team that just hoofs it or a team that relies solely on counter attacks, won.

Yeah, Holland were absolutely awful. Dirty, whining and with ball retention that made England look like Brazil 1970. The biggest indictment you can give is that England would probably have taken them to extra time tonight as well, they were that dreadful.

Bar Van Bommel who we know is a dirty bastard, then yes they do deserve respect as a team. I heard absolutely no condemantion of Spain's whining and card-waving antics. Xavi and Iniesta should become a referee after their career is finished, since they are so desperate to pull the cards out of the refs pocket and book/send players off by their own made up rules.

Dutch foul - Spanish players surround the ref

Spanish foul - Spanish players surround the ref

Agree. They were decent to watch, but far from entertaining. Worthy winners at the end, but no where near being "brilliant". Absoltue not.

Spain are pretty much undisputed best team in the world now. They also won the Unofficial Football World Champions title tonight by beating Holland.

It's amazing how people are bashing Spain for all sorts... they seem totally blind to the fact that Holland were just as bad when fouled if not worse! Not to mention the fact that Holland were disgustingly dirty in the game...

Posted

You also seem totaly blind to the fact Spain are also cheating little shits with the imaginary card waving and diving, Iniesta did a little kick out at Van Bommel without any punishment but no one seems to notice that.

Hmm... so all of Hollands karate kicking, diving, surrounding the ref, body checking, foot stamping, shirt pulling etc. etc. etc. wasn't as bad as Spain's diving and occasional fouling which wasn't any worse than we see in pretty much every game nowadays then?

Surrounding the ref? How can you even blame Holland for that refereeing performance, and were you watching how much more Spain were surrounding the ref?

Well to be quite honest, after witnessing some of the things that the Holland players were doing to their players, I think I'd have got onto the pitch to surround him too if it meant they got a card! Webb was FAR too lenient on the Dutch... at least 3 of their players should have gone.

But ultimately Spain have been pretty damn good in their own way. Maybe it's not the way we've grown to know from them in the last few years, but they were incredible effective this tournament. Aside from the one moment against Paraguay when Cardozo missed his penalty it's never looked in doubt. Even after they lost their first match.

They outclassed Portugal, outclassed the much-fancied Germans and did exatcly the same tonight against a Dutch side who disappointingly went against all morals to play a dirty game.

In front of goal it's not what we'd all have liked to have seen, but Spain still get admiration from me for their game. Undoubted quality in all areas of the pitch, they work well as a unit and are unquestionably the best side in the world for me. Tonight just proved it once again.

I'd rather see three de Jong kung fu kicks than see players surround the ref, waving imaginary cards. The ref is there for a reason, he'll decide who to book and who not to book. It's pathetic, asking for the other team to be handicapped.
