UK/GB international team

With all UK/GB teams now under-performing on the international stage, is it time for us to consider pooling what little talent we have together?

I know the argument would be who'd get into the England team but what are peoples thoughts on this?

I think there would be a huge outcry from all the home nations. I think people are too used to their national identity for this to work. Haven't the Scottish FA opposed a UK team for the 2012 Olympics.

Anyway it would just be England plus Bale.

Piss off!

No, seriously, none of us want it. At all. I don't even think the English want it, for the most part.

We'd rather be shit with our own identity than be forced to cheer on a bunch of English players (plus, maybe, Bale, Bellamy and Robbie Keane) branded 'Britain.'

And as much as I'm obviously proud to follow the Welsh side (mostly...) and it does pain me to admit it, the Scots have a unique and strong footballing history to easily match the English. They might not have been as typically successful on an international stage but they're still as noteworthy and I think it'd be sad to see them become extinct.

um, no thanks.

apart from the obvious things, i think it would end up creating more problems than it could ever possibly hope to solve.

besides, i don't think any of us are massively under-performing, there is just a smaller gap between us and the poorer quality nations. the competition has simply got stronger, england are more or less as successful as they have ever been and the others have just got sucked into a broader band of mediocrity.

No thanks.

As a one off for the Olympics perhaps but permanently? No way.

Far too much tradition and national pride in each nation for it to come off. Also, where would home games be played? Can't imagine Welsh fans being too happy to trudge down to Wembley. Or English fans too pleased to go to Hampden for that matter.

Ireland isn't part of Britain anyway. We'd be stuck with the same shit players underperforming.

I'd still rather that than support the English.

listening to the commentator of the Montenegro game last night , he said that none of those players would get into the Serbian side , so i think that would be a loss to international football and for those players

so i don't see the point of reversing a situation such as this

Should have done one for the 2012 games. Being a host nation not being involved is embarrassing. However as I'm all for dissolving the UK, and the home nations each have well over a century of individual tradition under their belts, I'm going to say I'm totally against the idea on more than a one-off basis.

Nothing stopping you having a GB team. We just said we don't want to be involved.

that's a bit like me saying i don't want to be a sex god :)

wtf happened there ?

Why is it anything like that?

wishing not to be considered for something you are not remotely likely to be considered for

ie the likelihood of welsh players being considered for a uk team

fook sake it's only a joke :)

Hijacking the thread quite significantly; Foxy, what exactly are your politics in regards NI and unification?

In an ideal world I'd love to see it happen but then again my ideal world would be a communist utopia without borders (the stuff of fairytales, I know).

In the real world I want partition to stay even though it has completely fooked up this 6 county shithole. Anyway even if it were to be democratically chosen through an election the loyalist paramilitaries would play up and the Troubles would reignite.

The Free State works on a free market economy (American style), there is basically no NHS, everything is private medical insurance, the corruption is unbelievable as is the nepotism and generally there's a really regressive attitude to things I hold dear.

The irony of SF is that they claim to be a Nationalist Socialist party yet if they were in any way left wing the last thing they would want is unification. The UK is far far far more socially minded in regards to having a safety net for those on hard times than down south.

Bit of a mixed message.

neither will the scots, ROI isn't part of britain so it would just be england + NI or to put it more simply: england.

I quite like the idea of competing separately at football tournaments and together at the Olympics, means we can have our cake and eat it. Bit of Ceremonial 'ties that bind' type stuff every four years, then we can all go back to resenting each other.

Also I rate Darren Fletcher over Barry, personally. I think having at least one person from everyone would be easier than it seems, with the possible exception of NI.

Agree on Fletcher.

I think if you back over years past, the England team would loved to have had a Giggs or Duff on the left wing, or an Ian Rush up front. It was just a thought, I sort of ike the idea of putting a team together for the Olympics then going back to resenting each other afterwards!

We're entering an English team under the Great Britain banner. FIFA couldn't make guarantees about keeping seperate teams if we allowed all home nations to be in the team. (After making a guarantee that entering a GB team wouldn't affect our seperate teams)
