Zingari Posted 6 November 2010 Posted 6 November 2010 Yes , I remember those days , and thankfully they are long gone Welshmen all went into communal "blacking up" rooms so they could go travel into the England and be treated with some respect .
dave the caveman Posted 6 November 2010 Posted 6 November 2010 Yeah, old collier me. I love the essay on prejudice and morality from someone playing on such a condescending Welsh stereotype. Is it really condescending to point out that Wales has proportionately more white people than Leicester? Fair enough if your post was an exercise in debuffing, but it remains that your comment about the education system in particular was a flagrant lie and could easily cause offence to those who have worked so hard to bring racial equality to this country.
Finnegan Posted 6 November 2010 Posted 6 November 2010 A flagrant lie? So BAME students aren't hugely under-represented in Russell Group universities nation wide? Whether or not standards are improving wasn't really the point, but in the best institutions around the country not only are white students a disproportionate majority but they're also significantly more likely to achieve whilst there: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/2010/jun/15/black-students-less-likely-first-class-degree Whether this is a reflection of the education system or the backgrounds the students come from is also entirely open for debate but it still enforces my point: statistically, it shows, it is easier to be white. I am not saying white students are in any way superior human beings, no more intelligent, no more committed to their courses and I'm not even making any sweeping statements about institutional racism in British universities. But the original point I was arguing against was the ridiculous notion that New Labour's "anti-white racism" had disadvantaged the "indigenous population" of this country and the rant you took exception to was a pop back.
