Sly Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 I know I voiced my opinion of this yesterday in the FIFA 2018 World Cup bidding thread but it seems it's also been mentioned elsewhere. http://www.leedsunited.com/news/20101203/united-chairman-calls-for-fifa-break-away_2247585_2236291 What are other peoples thoughts on this? I personally think that joke of a bidding system just illustrates where Countires England and Spain, two major countries that fund UEFA and then in turn FIFA, stand.

It's a money making organisation and I don't think they give a damn about football. Like those running English football and English Clubs are any different and he's just pissed off because his club's ground was one of those selected so his money making part of it has disappeared. When some one in English football that carries some credibility and integrity suggests it then it might be worthy of debate.
sdb Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 easier said than done, to put it lightly. but yes it is worth discussing seriously, because FIFA are a corrupt, farcical joke (and not just because of yesterday).
Fox You Forest Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 Probably best to concede defeat when you're opinion is the same as Ken Bates.
Guest Bilo Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 FIFA, UEFA and the FA are all the same as are the clubs. No point pretending that Ken Bates is any different. Profits first, players second and the fans an extremely distant third. If this was coming from someone who hadn't been so intimately involved in football greed I might listen but from Papa Smurf? Not a chance.
darko2k7 Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 Probably best to concede defeat when you're opinion is the same as Ken Bates. Was thinking the same thing when reading that rubbish , even if they did form a new Fifa type organisation, it would not take long for them to be accused of being corrupt as soon as something did not go our way <_<
The Doctor Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 pretty much everyone in any position of power, be it fifa, uefa, the fa, the government, whoever, is corrupt. It's human nature. If you've got a vote on something, the outcome of which is going to be crucial for the goals of a group of people, they're gonna come knocking at your door and look to bribe you. And when you're getting that much extra for doing something you already had to do, well our species greed comes to the fore once more.
Head Honcho Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 "There is no government powerful enough to investigate FIFA" A Jack Warner quote that in itself should be investigated. We've got nothing to lose and I'm no fan of Sky but a 30-40 consortium of countries backed by Sky and all the other major broadcasting company's would leave FIFA dead in the water.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 It all shouts of to me. And why we think A.) FIFA will listen to us B.) Anything would actually change C.) This tirade will help us win any other attempts we make at bidding to host the World Cup D.) We had a god given right to host the World Cup because "we're the home of football" is beond me. We lost, get over it. The system of voting natually lends itself to back scratching and we were playing the game too (I'm sure we did a deal with the USA etc and there was at least two or three conviently arranged friendlies). The reason the top guys are disapointed is because we performed felitatio on some and did get any head back, but hey ho, I think we deserve it with our whole "mightier than yow" stance.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 Ahhh Ken Bates, the one man who stood up to the greedy English clubs who wanted to break away and form a European Super League Bit of a tit, but he has his principles. Even if they do involve high ticket prices, being disrespectful to his dead ex-vice-chairman, and wanting electrified fencing at Stamford Bridge in the 80s. But no-one is perfect!
Guest ttfn Posted 3 December 2010 Posted 3 December 2010 I can not believe that anybody is espousing the virtues of Qatar, full stop. Let alone against those it was competing against. That decision has all but confirmed the accusations of corruption circling around Fifa before yesterday's decision. I think Russia was the wrong choice, but it is arguable that it should have got 2018. Qatar did not have the best bid (Fifa confirmed that technically, it was the worst) and certainly from a "spreading the word" perspective it's totally bullshit. Qatar has a population of 1.7 million for goodness sake. It's not South Africa. In a country which supposedly values its free press over its World Cup bid, we should have nothing to do with Blatter and his cronies. It is astonishing the level of power afforded to these men. Of course they're corrupt. Well, you would be wouldn't you? And yet we did have something to do with it. David Beckham prostituting himself to Jack Warner, and for what? Warner got his friendly, academy and day with David Cameron. Cameron himself has come out of this looking worst - whilst people struggled with the weather in the short term and the economy in the long, he was schmoozing corrupt individuals with little intention of making his precious time productive. I want us to pull out of Fifa, just to make a stand. We're not going to win the World Cup any time soon, and Fifa holds its present power through default. All it would take is a couple of England, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, USA, Australia, Korea and Japan to drop out and say "enough's enough", and Fifa would be on its knees. But we can't pull out. We're no better than anyone else here. Had we not been bidding, and Panorama uncovered this corruption, then we could have pulled out. But by even attending this circus the FA have lost their moral high ground. The business with Warner was totally unedifying, not to mention the pathetic manner in which they came out against Panorama. David Conn has written an excellent article in today's Guardian about how we have no right to complain about losing 2018. We don't. But it doesn't make Fifa any less corrupt, or Qatar any less an indefensible choice.
