Re: Leicester's Best Ever Player Poll

I really fail to understand exactly what questions / polls like this are trying to achieve.

I call it 'A Rocking Horse' because it gives us something to do but gets us nowhere.

Most fans if not all, will vote for a player they have actually seen in action. Those players who came before their time will not have real meaning for them other than what they have been told by their elders.

As someone who has been an avid fan of Leicester City for 61+ years, I would argue that there have been umpteen players who can lay claim to being our Club's 'best ever player'.

Names not in your list of 20 but who to my mind, should be included, are:

First and for me, foremost was Davie Gibson. At Inside Left, he was the most exciting player ever to wear a City shirt. Alongside him on the left wing was Mike Stringfellow - creating for City fans, a partnership the like of which has never been surpassed.

Sep Smith, Hughie Adcock and Johnny Duncan were before my time and yours too most likely, but they were true 'greats' that will be talked about for as long as Leicester City FC exists.

In Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, we had two world class goalkeepers, but don't ignore the likes of goalies Dave McLaren, Mark Wallington, Kasey Keller and Tim Flowers.

Arthur Rowley was goal scorer supreme but Mal Griffiths, Derek Hogg, Johnny Morris, Howard Riley, Ken Leek, Frank McLintock, David Nish, Graham Cross (599 appearances) and John Sjoberg were also fantastic servants of the Club in their day.

Then moving on we remember the totally unforgettable Keith Weller, Frank Worthington, Derek Dougan, Matt Elliott , Alan (sniffer) Clark, Stan Collymore, Tony Cottee, Steve Claridge, Steve Guppy, Alan Birchenall, Brian Deane and Alan Young.

And you can't ignore Theo Zagorakis, Pontus Kaamark, Peter Rodrigues, Iwan Roberts or Robbie Savage.

Remember that from 1884, over a thousand players have 'worn the shirt' and the truth is I could have listed another two or three hundred and I would still have left someone out.

Football is a team game and I would not wish to see the memories of so many players who as Leicester City FC have given me so much pleasure over the years, devalued..

I'll give you just one more name. A player called Yuki Abe who, if he stays at Leicester will be another legend!

These polls alwasy get us no where, mainly because they are quite unfair. What I mean by that is, not many people have seen the older players on the list, like Chandler, even the likes of Lineker are before the time of a lot of posters on here like myself who then vote the likes of Izzet.

Another reason is that you cant always compare like for like. How can say Gordon Banks, be compared to Emile Heskey? He cant, they play in different positions, so how can one be considered greater than the other. The best thing to do is name a 'greatest player in each postion'.

E.g.

Best goalie, full back, centre half, centre midfielder, winger, striker.

Much fairer in my opinion, though some people will disagree.

No Gary Linekar? 48 International goals? Went on to Barca?

Gary Lineker is the first name in the actual poll. Although I have mentioned other names listed in the poll, the thrust of my argument is that each and every fan will have their own favourite player, their own abiding memory and that will most likely stay with them throughout their life.

Mine was Davie Gibson but I also admired Albert Cheesebrough and was 'over the moon' with Willie Gardiner. Then again, there was Bobby Roberts, Ritchie Norman, John (Jack) Ogilvie who I met in the 1884 bar the other week.

Those fans who were born after the 50's, 60's and 70's missed out on a fantastic and exciting period of City's history.

Yes I know it's a different game today but we had goals galore, excitement and atmosphere beyond words, we even scored from corners!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great little post.... you missed Ian Walker out of the list of class Goalkeepers we've had (and thereby proving your own point.)

You're quite right in stating that you can only judge from what you've seen. I know Rowley was a goal machine, but I've never seen one of them unfortunately. How many footballing endeavours and spectacles are now only recorded in paper and ink, even lost from living memory? But even film can't tell you the whole story. It has to be who you've seen.

I picked Mancini myself. Only a handful of games in a declining City team, but he clearly had class well above anything that I'd ever seen in a City shirt. I also have a soft spot for Gary Mills, who I once remember taking the ball from a right back position to the left wing and providing a brilliant cross that should have been a goal. It's moments that stay with you like that.

Hadn't totally forgotten about Ian Walker! He blotted his copybook with me when he had a moment of pure aberation in coming well out of his area and for some inexplicable reason, picked up the ball and got himself promptly sent off.

Gary Mills! Totally had forgotten about him! He was yet another stalwart full-back. I should also make mention of Len Chalmers and Willie Cunningham. and Gordon Wills on the Left Wing - I used to call him 'Twinkletoes'!

Was in awe of Mancini! Five appearances of pure class!

Slight overreaction to a harmless poll?

Polls like that bore me a bit but not sure it needs an essay analysis or another thread?

I disagree with you on this, it actually seems like a valid point. The Best Ever player is normally only ever going to be based on who the majority of posters have seen or heard about from recent memory. And becuase of this the names from the past who may have been fantastic players will eventually be forgotten. In 30 years time we will be saying the same when Izzet, Walsh etc are but a distant memory. It wont make them any less great to us but it will make them players who are just clips on the 2040 version of youtube that most will only have a vague understanding or appreciation of.

So there you go its got me interested enough to stop being a lurker and actually post.

The point of the original poll was a harmless bit of nostalgia - i have personally been supporting City since 1979-80 season and have my own favourites from the early years Alan YOUNG and Jim MELROSE and eddie KELLY from when i first went to LYNEX. LINEKER, SMITH as a potent front 3 in the 80's then obviously the WALSH, IZZET, LENNON, HESKEY era followed by more recently the ABE, WELLENS, KING midfield we have now but also i have heard stories from my uncles and step father of players such as WORTHINGTON, WELLER, GLOVER and even further back ROWLEY etc. A NOSTALGIC look back thats all as a genuine Leicester fan not really meant to piss people off or anything???? Oh well you cant please everyone can you? Up the CITY anyway!!!! :scarf:

Agree with this in a round about way. Pretty harmless on a discussion forum. 'Favourite Leicester player' would have maybe been a more aptly named title but hey ho. Can't see what people are getting all menstrual about.

How nice it is to know that there are some really sensible, intelligent, level-headed City fans who take time out to contribute to these message boards, especially when, like me, they should probably have been doing something else!

I refer to Haydos' post. The simplest solution is often the best and I loved the word 'Favourite'!!!!

Everybody has a favourite player, a special memory, whatever age you are, regardless of when you first went to see City. No one can criticise you, though they may well disagree! Posts can be as nostalgic or not so, as you wish.

There can be as much enjoyment in reminiscing as looking forward to the next game or games ahead.

Certainly no Ill-feelings jjstowell though I reckon that Callum Davidson might have possibly stopped at your first word re Dennis Wise!
