FuriousFox46 Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 Starting XI Weale 7.5 - Wasn't often needed but when he was, he did well Naughton 8 - His best performance in a long time, defended well and got up when needed, great goal two Mee 7.5 - Looked strong at the back, massive improvement from the Millwall game. Bamba 9 - He comes from another World. Absolutely brilliant today. Van Aanholt 7 - Far from our best player, but a decent enough performance. Abe 6 - A non-entity for large portions of the game, wasn't strong enough keeping possession. Wellens 6.5 - played well but no way near his high standards, gave away silly balls. King 9 - Midfield masterclass, Barnsley were powerless to resist in all departments. Gallagher 7.5 - Hit and miss today, some great shots and some diabolical. Vassell 5.5 - Had little impact up front made a couple of good runs but to no effect. Yakubu 6 - The determination was their, but looked less sharp than in previous games. Subs Oakley 7 - Looks greatly improved, hit a superb strike towards the end. Dyer 7.5 - Always makes an impact even as a second half substitute. Hobbs 6.5 - Like others said his substitution was inconsequential. Others Sven 10 - Happy Birthday Indiana Colt Cheerleaders 8.5 - Good show despite those insufferable screechy voices. Leicester Fans 8.5 - Good game today, some great chants even though I can't help but wonder if our taunting helped them score. Barnsley Fans 6.5 - Better than I thought they'd be but still largely average.
Jackirius Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 Weale 8 - Shit defending for the goal, couldn't really do much, looked comfortable. Naughton 8 - Think he did really well today, great goal, went forward well and defended pretty sound, need to play the ball a bit earlier though occasionally. Bamba 8.5 - Great game, looked strong defending corners and a few cheeky runs down the middle. Mee 8 - Good game, seems to be settling in. Van Aanholt 7 - Looked a bit shaky at times and didn't get back quick enough leaving Vassell to cover him, though did show some moments of quality at the back. Abe 7 - Won a few balls in the middle of the park but just didn't seem to be as involved as usual. Wellens 7.5 - Looked very good on the counter, not the usual amazing performance but still did pretty well. King 8.5 - 2 well taken goals, worked hard. Gallagher 7 - Well taken goal, dead balls did lack a bit on occasions. Yakubu 5.5 - Who? Not his best game. Vassell 6 - Again, pretty non existent. Subs: Dyer 7, Oakley 7, Hobbs 7 Atmosphere: 7.5, last 10 or so mins in the kop was pretty decent. Poznan looked good in the east stand. Half Time: 9.5 Good but the voices weren't half annoying. Anyone see Wellens come out of the tunnel and just stand and admire for a minute?
okie fox Posted 5 February 2011 Posted 5 February 2011 Weale -7- Dealt well with everything Naughton -8- Very good all-round performance, great shot for goal Bamba -8- Great except when he treads on the ball. Has enough strength and speed to recover however! Mee -7- Much improved over last home match. Some good tackles. van Aanholt -6- Has lots of speed, but lacks final ball and needs to improve defensvey Abe -6- Weak performance Wellens -7- Good, but not at his best King -9- Two goals and he wasn't anonymous today! Vassell -5- Didn't do much Yakuba -6- Generally took the wrong options Gallagher -8- Tremendous shot and involved in a lot of the build-ups. Playing like the Gallagher of old. SUBS: Oakley -7- Calmed things down, played much better than Abe Dyer -7- He was far more effective than Vassell Hobbs -6- Only on for 10 minutes, but did OK
skinnydipper Posted 6 February 2011 Posted 6 February 2011 Van Aanholt 5.5 (Just didn't impress. So much of Barnsley's danger. including their goal plus a goal that was disallowed, came from crosses from the right. Some of his positioning looked questionable, his distribution was shaby, he provided very little attacking presence until the last fifth of the game and his habit of ambling back into position after giving the ball away would have had me hauling him off in no time. He shouldn't be menioned in the same breath as Ashley Cole. Interesting how people's perception of his performance differ so much. Perhaps my high expectations of him contributed to the level of my disappointment in his performance. Your assessment is the closest to my own although I wouldn't have given him more than a 4. In the last 10 minutes he showed glimpses of an attacking capability but yesterday didn't offer enough to justify selection in the light of his defensive frailties. Positioning, distribution and delivery were all poor and I was annoyed at the sight of him casually jogging back as they attacked down our left after he had lost possession. Of course Mee had a howler of a start but has since improved so hopefully vA will do the same.
reynard Posted 6 February 2011 Posted 6 February 2011 Van Aanholt 5.5 (Just didn't impress. He shouldn't be menioned in the same breath as Ashley Cole. King 9.5 (Midfield masterclass. Two absolutely brilliant goals, sad he didn't shoot to give himself the chance of a third. Hardly put a pass wrong. In fact he was carving Barnsley apart at times. Showed such vision and selflessness, making everything easy for his colleagues with countless examples of his pass and move style. Coupled with uncanny accuracy, it was little surprise he was the offical sponsor's man of the match. How come there is not mention of King's (and I'm pretty sure it was him) feeble attempt at tackling their player just before he scored. Ok the cross came from Van Aanholt's side but it was dealt with. The goals was scored because first their player was not closed down quickly enough and secondly the attempted tackle on him was one my 80 year old mother would have been ashamed of. As I said I think you'll find it was King who was responsible (happy to be corrected) so not quite a masterclass really. Also though his first goal was a wonderful effort finally he did rather mess up his first attempt and got a good deal of luck with the rebound. The goal was however, made by a wonderful backheel by Vassell I believe a player you seemed to think contributed very little. However, King did have a fine game and is having a good season but he can still improve. Also the only reason we didn't score 6 or 7 was because their keeper made at least 3 maybe 4 top quality saves though Yakubu should have done better.
cc_star Posted 6 February 2011 Posted 6 February 2011 Weale 7.5 - Solid Naughton 7.5 - Mediocre defensively. Cracking hit for the goal. Mee 7.5 - Better. Somebody needs to tell him to stop going to ground. Bamba 8 - One day he's going to cost us an important goal. For now, he's ace. Van Aanholt 6 - Woeful final ball, good free kick. Abe 6 - Poor today. Uninvolved and poor distribution. Wellens 7 - Mixed bag. King 9 - 2 wonderful goals and some great passing. His vision to pick out van Aanholt in the first half was brilliant. Gallagher 7.5 - Occasionally casual, but great hit for the goal. Vassell 7 - No great impact. Yakubu 5 - Pretty much an identical performance to the one against Millwall, but he didn't score today. Evidently lazy but possesses a great deal of class on the ball. If Fryatt had put in a performance like that in a City shirt there'd be all kinds of abuse flying around. Oakley was good off the bench, Lloyd less so. Sounds about right. Also, Vassell seems to be getting a lot of good grace that Waggy (& formally Fryatt) never got too
