who should craig levein play in centre of midfield

3-5-2 for me as this compliments either stewart or Tiatto and by the sounds of it Sylla would do a good job on the right there. if not canero im sure could fit in aswell.

I think Levein will be fairly flexible about his midfield to begin with, depending on the opposition. Another formation he may well use away from home is 4-5-1, like he did at Blackburn.

williams and hughes at home - away teams last season came for the point so we need the creativity of them both

williams hughes and kisnorbo for away games as we will need the battler in the tougher games

My midfield at the moment would be:

Tiatto Williams Hughes Sylla

Kisnorbo

Sylla would provide the out and out width on his side, with tiatto maybe tucking in slightly. Kisnorbo sitting infront of back 3 of McCarthy, Stearman and Maybury.

Up front would be Connolly and  Deep Freeze as we currently have nobody else to play up there with him. Henderson in goal rather than Douglas B)

I would play a diamond formation in midfield with Kisnorbo sitting in front of the back 4 then Sylla and Hughes on the right and left of the diamond and Williams playing at the top of the diamond.

This would allow flexiblity and fluidity when attacking with Williams and Hughes being able to interchange, Sylla would be able to provide width out on the right and this formation would also encourage the full backs to get forward. Kisnorbo would provide the defensive cover and would just sit. This allows us to play both Hughes and Williams who are undoubtedly the two best footballers in the squad whilst still providing a defensive midfielder and still allowing us to play with width when required.

that formation would be great to play at the walkers when the emphasis is on us to attack , as u say we need to accomodate williams and hughes . away from home when we need to be solid the personel and system would need to be changed and maybe we would play a flat midfield with tiatto coming on to the left for williams or hughes or we play 4-5-1

To be honest Sparky I think that formation could actually work away from home as well as it would give the home team something to think about, IMO we have the quality players and we should play our natural game, in the games where we have got at teams and imposed our game we have looked a good side, it is when we sit back and show teams too much respect that we struggle and invariably lose or draw even against poor quality opposition.

What we can in away games is make the 4-4-2 more rigid when in defensive situations so Hughes plays more left sided and Williams can drop back into the centre to form an orthodox midfield 4.

I'd like to see Hughes and Williams, but if there's any signs of Williams going 'missing' I would throw on Kisnorbo to show Williams that he can't afford to not get stuck in.

everyone in here seems to be running away with themselfs over kisnorbo.

my friend is a season ticket holder of 5 year's at hearts and well his comments were.

useless on the ball

piss poor tackleing

no skill

n always caught on the ball

so everyone putting him in their midfield for next season big mistake

my team would be

douglas

mccarthy,dublin,stearman

sylla,hughes,williams,gudjonsson,tiatto

connolly, de vries

My answer would be that I don't know. Hughes for me is a must in midfield but who plays with him is a problem. I've not seen Kisnorbo play so I can't really say him, Gudjonsson is a very 'hit and miss' player with a variety of performances to put in on the day and Williams goes missing far too much at the moment. I wouldn't play Williams and Hughes together (in a 442) because that's only going to hold both of them back (Williams will be forced into a defensive role and Hughes will have to sit back when Williams goes missing).

I do like the idea of a 3-5-2 system with Williams, Hughes and Joey/Paddy but I'm not sure Levein likes the idea of that. So I guess the solution is Hughes with Joey/Paddy, although it seems a shame to relegate Williams to the bench as we know that he can turn it on sometimes. So as previously mentioned, I don't know. :P

Personally i'd like Hughes and Williams in the centre but it won't happen that often. It's obvious that first choice will be Kisnorbo and either Hughes or Williams. If Williams plays in the centre than Hughes will be on the right or left. It's appears that Levein sees Skippy Kisnorbo as the linchpin in our team and he'll definately start there unless he gets injured.

I hope Hughes plays in the centre, i'd like us to play wing-backs after last season when we played it at times I think we shouldn't as we were crap. Sylla is apparently a liability at wing-back so I doubt we'll play that formation.

4-4-2 it is then.

As I've said in a previous thread, I'd like to see a system where Hughes and Williams take it in turns to do the attacking and defensive duties in a four man midfield, similar to what Petit/Vieira used to do for Arsenal. With Tiatto tucking in from the left, that would add the bite in midfield, with Sylla maintaining his width on the right.

I dont think it would be feasible leaving the left side completely closed off and relying on sylla for the crosses etc from wings. If we are to make the playoffs, we need to have some chances from both sides. With Tiatto coming inside and holding it will mean we can only rely on our left back to surge forward and put crosses in. I would rather have Hughes and Williams both with Kisnorbo in central in a 3-5-2 where we have dedictaed wing backs, or a 4-4-2 at the expense of either Williams/Hughes (probably the former). We have lacked width on the left for a while now with Tiattos style the way he is and due to CL insisting on keeping him in midfield.

So more to the point

3-5-2 with Hughes, Kisnorbo and Williams in midfield

OR

4-4-2 with Hughes, Kisnorbo in midfield (Williams on the bench)

The 4-4-2 option may even give Williams the kick up the backside so he realises his place isnt guaranteed and that he has to put in consistent performances week in week out. Hughes may also step up a gear if he thinks his position may be under threat. Competition for places is vital at any level I think.
