Season opens Tuesday March 15th in Seattle. Sounders V L.A. Galaxy...full slate of games Saturday the 19th.

Seeing as our stiffs hammered one of their touring sides the standard cant be too clever.

Its not great I would rate some of their teams as lower level championship but I reckon LA full strength would be perhaps lower premier league standards.

Last I heard there's 300 Timber Army members flying 3 hrs to Denver from Portland(I'm leaving on a 6 a.m. flight) for the Saturday opener. I've even heard reports of people car pooling 20 hrs driving time to Denver from the northwest. We should have nearly 500 at the game if Portland fans scattered around the country make their reported trips..should be a good time in the mile high city.

I'm very excited about this new season - Portland finally blessed with an MLS outfit and Vancouver got their Whitecaps back to where they belong.

Portland vs. Seattle should be quite the treat and same goes for Vancouver vs. Seattle (which is actually a closer rivalry, at least distance-wise - sorry, Bridge whistle.gif).

And Philadelphia's PPL stadium in Chester, which I've never seen before, looks amazing, with a stunning view onto the Commodore Barry Bridge.

In any case, good to see the league prosper and growing.

Maybe one day they'll drop that "Soccer" sh*t and label it correctly.ph34r.gif

I agree that the new Pacific NW rivalries can only be great for the league (and I don't think either of those teams need to worry about which rival is "bigger," all games will be intense).

I didn't go to the new park at the end of last season (and don't have plans to do so this season, yet). It looks to be a beauty--just don't wander anywhere outside of the parking lots. Chester, PA isn't exactly a tourist attraction.

In any case, good to see the league prosper and growing.

But that would make us look and sound like pretentious fools. No, honestly, it sounds ridiculous when Americans say "football" and pepper their conversations with Anglicisms (cue the "as if you Yanks don't sound half ridiculous already..." comments... lol)

Kerrea Gilbert had his Visa turned down after signing with Portland Timbers.

What's the deal with the New York Cosmos? Are they coming back for 2012 or what?

Their kits are being made by Umbro but I always thought all the MLS kits were adidas so what's the deal there?

Will they share the Red Bulls' new stadium?

MLS confuses me.

EDIT: Sorry, 2013. 2012 would be too early wouldn't it?

im stuck with the Charlotte Eagles as my local ' soccer' team. Dissapointed. should of been more careful in who i married.

Having said that, they are a full time professional team and have way more merchandise for sale that City do which is frankly, odd...

They play in the USL Pro league and being new to the states i have no clue as to what standard that is.... i do know it isnt Major League Soccer tho so anyone with any help on that would be welcomed....

Just a quick look at their team for this year will tell you they have some very skillful sounding players with plenty of Latino influence...

I live in Vancouver and have brought a season ticket, interested to see how the MLS season goes. I went to a few games when they played in the USL lat season in a small 6,000 capactity stadium with only one stand. This year the games will be played at Empire Stadium before they move to BC Place which is currently undergoing renovations. I'm going to the first game of the season today vs Toronto, looking forward to watching live football again (although it will never be as good as watching Leicester, it's better than nothing!).

Jay Demerit is playing for the whitecaps?? good signing....

4-2 with 6 minutes to go... should wrap this one up...

Happy to see the Caps got a good win in their first home match..enjoyed some good times with the Whitecaps supporters the last few years. Our result was disappointing but think nerves got the better of our boys after giving up a poor goal early in the first half.

Denver is a great town(never been before) & their supporters were excellent..we had a prematch meet up and tailgate party outside the ground. The Rapids fans were in high spirits as the season opener was a celebration of last years MLS championship. The Great Divide brewery http://greatdivide.com/ put on a brewery tour for the Timber Army supporters..excellent brew and cheap prices. All in all a great trip..excepting the fact we were soundly beaten.

Here are my views and player ratings from the first Whitecaps game in the MLS.

7- Nolly- Confident performance from the experienced Whitecaps keeper did well to command his area and was vocal throughout, was not at fault for both goals and showed good handling his kicking was a bit hit and miss but he showed why he has been called upon in previous seasons.

7.5- Rochat- Good performance from the left back, I really like the look of this guy strong, confident and a good tackler you can tell he has experience played well in the back 4 and was able to move the ball quickly up field the LB position looks solid with him this season.

6- Boxall- Good first performance, he’s only going to get better in my opinion playing alongside DeMerit he will gain the experience he needs. Was at fault for the first TFC goal De Rosario totally skinned him but he will learn he did a good job on clear outs and corners.

7.5- DeMerit- Strongest one in the back 4 for me. Showed his class he is one of the best defenders in the entire league. He commanded the back for and bossed the TFC forwards around also loved the impact he made during the corners created space for himself and got his head to the ball with 2 very good chances.

7- Leathers- Wasn’t sure what to expect from him I knew he played for Kansas City before, but he looks like a good pickup. Not the most skilled player but he plays a simple 1 to 2 touch no nonsense style. Did well to get the ball out and great support on the flank he was moving up great on the overlaps and got in some good crosses.

7- Tiebert- I’m surprised he’s not playing for an academy team in Europe. Great performance from the left winger, he worked well with the center midfielders and got forward also liked how he dropped back from time to time, solid distribution thought he was a bit shaky though at times but it was his first MLS game and with experience he will get better.

8- Chiumiento- Great performance from the center mid/ right wing/ attacking playmaker, he’s going to be one of the Whitecaps star players this season he had a great impact laying on 2 assists too bad he went off at half, he has the awareness and skill to be an impact player in this league really excited by him. The through ball for Dunfield’s goal showed his class.

7.5- Dunfield- The hometown guy played his heart out grabbed a goal and did well in the center mid role also at times it appeared as if he was dropping back to play as a defensive mid a good performance for the most part a bit shaky with distribution but he has the skill to play.

7- Koffie- Interesting player he is has good movement on the pitch and I thought he linked up well with Chiumiento running into channels and playing off him in terms of where to go and when. He’s young and I think the Whitecaps management can mould him into a solid center midfielder.

7-Harris- Grabbed a goal off the corner on a pivot did well to make himself space for it and settle it. Could have easily had 3 goals though but you can tell he has MLS experience he played well in the deep lying forward role but did well to play supportive as well.

9- Hassli (Man of the Match) - Grabbed 2 goals and did exactly what is expected as the teams designated player. Did great to move into space for his first goal with a confident volley strike on the left foot. He shows good vision and can play not only as a target man but can move himself back and forth as a supportive forward. I was really impressed with his vision and movement the second goal showed his class with the initial breakup of play and a great through ball to Harris he then moved up the pitch at least 40-50 yards made himself into space and finished off the good cross from knight.

SUBS

7-Khalfan- Came on at halftime and did was needed from him saw him play last year for the Whitecaps and he showed he can be a solid second option for the midfield good vision and movement his passing was suspect at times but he will do well as the season goes on.

7-Knight- Good cameo performance from him, showed why he deserves to be on the team played the last few season with the Whitecaps he’s a versatile player he can play in defence as well, good support and passing did well to pick up the assist for Hassli second goal.

Camilo (not on long enough to give a rating) Interesting signing he is, came on late as a sub for Hassli don’t really know anything about him I was told he scored the most goals in the league over in Malta a few seasons ago. He seems steady and moves into channels well but I think he was signed only as a depth player.

Overall

Good performance from the Whitecaps on their debut, couldn’t ask for more on an opening day 4-2 win lots of goals and great atmosphere. TFC are rebuilding and you can tell they are trying to play Dutch style football, they came out in a 4-3-3 but it was lacking once De Guzman is fit they will start to click he will be able to control the midfield for them I expect a much tighter game the next time these 2 meet. I think Vancouver did well to pressure for corners 12-13 corners I think the Whitecaps had, I liked the 4-4-2 we played at times it seemed we went into a diamond formation in the first half using Chieumiento as a playmaker it worked well and the fact that we kept playing offensive for the entire game at home was great. The team needs strengthening and with 27 of the 30 roster spots full I expect another midfielder and forward will be added, Canadian Kevin Harmse is still on trial with the club and I think he will be signed he has the experience to add the depth the Whitecaps need in midfield. Overall great game and look forward to Philadelphia next Saturday.

What does that mean?

MLS has a salary cap..with the exception of 2 or even 3 Designated players who can be paid well above the rest of the squad . If your making 60k a week and everyone else on the team is making 5k or less your expected to be the main man.

Same in Australia. Each team is allowed "marquee" players on higher salaries. That's one marquee player, a junior marquee under the age of 23, and (if they can find one), an Aussie marquee player
