MC Prussian Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 ... and also looking forward to seeing both the Montreal Impact and the New York Cosmos back in the game in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
MC Prussian Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 I live in Vancouver and have brought a season ticket, interested to see how the MLS season goes. I went to a few games when they played in the USL lat season in a small 6,000 capactity stadium with only one stand. This year the games will be played at Empire Stadium before they move to BC Place which is currently undergoing renovations. I'm going to the first game of the season today vs Toronto, looking forward to watching live football again (although it will never be as good as watching Leicester, it's better than nothing!). I went to see a few Whitecaps games back in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Swangard stadium is a fine one, albeit with only one real stand and the race track doesn't really add to it. I always found the atmosphere a bit cringeworthy, in particular the pre-game activities. The support, however, has always been top-notch.
purpleronnie Posted 24 March 2011 Posted 24 March 2011 I read portland too over 400 fans to denver not bad for a round trip of around 2,500 miles. I also read security had to throw portland fans out because they just stayed inside after the match and sang for 20 minutes after everyone had gone home. Here they are:- And people think US fans don't like 'soccer'.
Bridge Posted 24 March 2011 Author Posted 24 March 2011 http://www.prostamerika.com/2011/03/24/away-fans-to-have-photos-taken-39597/ The latest stupidity from league FO's.. They want to force all away fans at the Cascadia Derby matches to have photo's taken and the clubs to have chaperones for each 50 fans. I feel like they think the Timber Army is a special op's brigade and not a football supporters group.
purpleronnie Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Great attendances for the opening week, I reckon this MLS season will be the highest attended so far.
Jordan Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Scrappy game in Columbus; the Red Bull "reserves" picked up a point with a 0-0 draw. I should be making my belated season debut at Red Bull Arena next Saturday to watch the home team beat purpleronnie's boys.

Houston were very resiliant again Shittle at Qwerst (1-1) might not be so easy. Sadly i know where the easy pts will come..beaten in the permafrost by TFC without a whimper is hard to take.
Jordan Posted 27 March 2011 Posted 27 March 2011 Houston were very resiliant again Shittle at Qwerst (1-1) might not be so easy. "May the best team win!" wouldn't be very good pre-match banter
Samwise Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 The Whitecaps have been brilliant so far; we made TFC look downright silly, and last week's narrow away loss to Philadelphia might have been a point if The Beast had kept his cool. It should be a great season, if we can keep our best players fit - two games in and we've already got half our first team out. Still, could be worse; we could be Portland. They've looked dreadful so far. The TFC vs. Timbers match was awful. If any fellow Vancouverite Foxes-in-exile fancy a pint, either before/after the Whitecaps match on Saturday or whenever, please feel free to give me a shout. There's been so much to talk about this season, and no-one to talk to!
General Smuts Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 Sounders still smash it with Montero and Kasey Keller.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 I'm supporting Colorado because they've got a quality kit, until the Cosmos come back, then it's a given they'll be 'my team' in the MLS.
MC Prussian Posted 7 April 2011 Posted 7 April 2011 I'm sorry to say this, but the match presentation on the MLS website is really cringeworthy. Take the recent Vancouver vs. New England game for instance: Cheesy rock music in the background during the opening few seconds of the report, then it kicks off with the kick-off and no highlights whatsoever until the 43rd minute. Also, hardly any commentary whatsoever in the beginning. It's as if the reporters aren't even in the stadium (either that or they know shit about the players). And then, to top it off, at the end of the game, they've added some more scenes from the first half - wtf? As for the game itself, Hassli's a complete tw*t, receiving a second yellow for taking his shirt off after converting the penalty (although he wore an identical Caps shirt underneath ). All in all, pretty shambolic.
purpleronnie Posted 15 April 2011 Posted 15 April 2011 MLS has taken a further step after seeing Portland play, blimey their fans were brilliant. Who'd of thought it could ever be as good as that in Yanky land.
sdb Posted 15 April 2011 Posted 15 April 2011 Watched a Galaxy game on ESPN yesterday - bloody awful I have to say.
purpleronnie Posted 15 April 2011 Posted 15 April 2011 Watched a Galaxy game on ESPN yesterday - bloody awful I have to say. Do you mean the quality? Portland game was great 4-2, but I was more interested in the fans...yes I'm sad.
MC Prussian Posted 16 April 2011 Posted 16 April 2011 So, Bridge - apart from the emphatic result, how was the first Portland home game in the MLS? I heard 20'000 showed up for your premiere. Impressive. Funny to see you got yourself an odd mascot in Joey "Timber" Webber. At first I thought it was a joke hearing a chainsaw in a football stadium, but hey - that's entertainment, right?
Bridge Posted 16 April 2011 Author Posted 16 April 2011 Attending a Timbers game at the old(new) park is just about the best time you can have legally with your clothes on. The quality of the football wasn't the greatest..but what a fantastic opening night! I'm so glad I have season tickets..even the slimey scalpers outside the ground were desperate to buy any extra tickets to resell for a profit. We're always forced to sit through a shitty rendition of the Star Spangled Banner played by a military band or sung by a cheesey American idol wannabe..last night our supporters group(Timbers Army) sang it unaided by anything except their own voices. If we have to listen to the anthem every game this is def the way forward! Can't wait for Sunday afternoon.. Dallas V Timbers 2pm.
MC Prussian Posted 18 April 2011 Posted 18 April 2011 And they've won again!! Well done Portland, but again, you scare your own fans by putting up a great show at the beginning, only to fade dramatically towards the end of the game. Bridge, how many nerves left?
Bridge Posted 18 April 2011 Author Posted 18 April 2011 We're playing a little better each game out..getting players healthy..though expected starters Zizzo & Nagbe can't break into the line-up now. Wonder if Samwise wants to talk about the Caps thrilling 0-0 draw at home against the mighty Chivas?? (sorry Alex) They could make it a little easier on the nerves but 6 pts in 4 days is never bad!
Bridge Posted 23 April 2011 Author Posted 23 April 2011 When you can hear a leg break over the TV you know it's horrific! Not a fan of the Sounders but wish the best for Zakuani..a great young rising star. A lengthy ban for Mullan must be in the offing..just a terrible tackle. It makes the result of the game irrelevent.

Just seen the highlights of that game on the MLS homepage. Terrible. One of these sounds that give every football fan the creeps. Although you can question Mullan's intention - ball or leg? You decide.
Winchester Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 I believe portland timbers used to be twinned with the mighty shaymen of halifax town - some 10 years ago or so? Doubt any Town fans, despite how low the club has slipped the last decade, ever expected to see their friends across the pond pulling in crowds 20x the size of theirs!

Yes, I believe the connection goes back to 2002. Several former Timbers players once played for Halifax Town FC..I"m not too well informed of the origin of the conection but there is still a forum section on Halifax Town on our supporters board.
