purpleronnie Posted 25 April 2011 Posted 25 April 2011 Wasn't their a friendship between portland and sunderland?
Bridge Posted 25 April 2011 Author Posted 25 April 2011 Wasn't their a friendship between portland and sunderland? Yep..Sunderland came over in 2005 to play a friendly(think they just went up that season) & a large group of their fans were on the tour. It made quite an impression that so large a group would travel all the way to the west coast..a section of our support still stays in contact & travel exchanges take place now & again. We have a friendly this summer with Ajax..hope they bring some fans along. Knowing our supporters Amsterdam will be on the travel agenda!
MC Prussian Posted 1 May 2011 Posted 1 May 2011 Nice gesture from the Seattle fans holding up thousands of number 11s and shouting "Steve" and "Zakouani" in support of their injured player. Impressive, a wall of sound. Oh, and before Bridge has a go at me - congrats for beating Real Salt Lake at home.
shen Posted 2 May 2011 Posted 2 May 2011 Any MLS enthusiast, can you enlighten me on how Casino Jimmy and Rajko Lekic are doing over there?
purpleronnie Posted 2 May 2011 Posted 2 May 2011 Managed to see some of the final, thought salt lake should have won it. Great crowd too. Portland still amaze me its like watching south american fans, smoke, tonnes of flags/tifo. As for Houston, things seem to be going ok. I do miss going though. Houston v New York Red Bulls FC Dallas v Real Salt Lake Houston v FC Dallas Portland Timbers v DC United I'll be there bridge. Going with some work colleagues, its going to be real tight though with the flights, infact we will probably miss the start. Got to leave right after the game too, but I thought it was worth it.
Bridge Posted 2 May 2011 Author Posted 2 May 2011 We were fortunate to catch RSL 3 days after their tough loss in the CL final to the Mexicans. Even though they rested several of their regulars it was with a bit of luck and grit that we were able to hold on for a 1 nil win. (the crowd was fantastic) The Timbers are gonna take their lumps on the road but i think we'll be very tough to beat at our home ground. Both teams come out right under the Timber Army at the start of the match & the away team gets a taste of it immediately..it's hard to believe after the madness on opening night but there really hasn't been any let up in the support. Are you flying over to see Houston or all the way to the west coast Purpleronnie?

I'm visiting the offices in Houston and I'm then flying over to see portland, I just hope there's no delays its going to be tight as it is, if not I'll just check out the city instead.
Bridge Posted 2 May 2011 Author Posted 2 May 2011 Cool..do you have tickets yet? It's just about impossible to get decent seats as every match is a sellout. I've got access to extra seats if you give me a heads up. TA seating wouldn't work cause you have to stand in line for several hrs as it's non-reserved standing. Let me know & i'll pm you my cell #..either way I'll stand you a pint!

Yes I have tickets for all the games, I knew about this a while ago and bought tickets, they're cheap so if I dont get in on time so be it. Thanks for the offer though. TBH things are so tight time wise I will be surprised if I get to see the start and might either have to leave early or rush after the final whistle, seems odd i Know but it could be a laugh!

That sounds like a tight schedule..hope it works out. If you have any questions about game day or the city let me know. Just a hint..if you want to really get the best game day experience you might be able to sneak into the TA section at half time. The ushers are generally overwhelmed in the crazyness(is that a word?) in the north end & don"t check to see if everyone entering have TA clearance. As the NE is general admission just stand where you like.. Mike..

My mate in houston got the tickets I'm sure he said something about 'sideline seats'. Thanks for the tip I may well try that. I know what you mean about security, it was pretty none existant at Houston, well compared to over here anyway.
MC Prussian Posted 8 May 2011 Posted 8 May 2011 What strikes me as rather odd when I look at this season's MLS results so far is the genuine lack of goals in almost every single match. There's also a lot of scoreless draws. 1-0 or 1-1 seems to be the general consensus. I just hope the games are more spectacular than the results are implying.
MC Prussian Posted 12 May 2011 Posted 12 May 2011 Seriously - three games and only five goals scored? It's getting a bit embarrassing.
purpleronnie Posted 12 May 2011 Posted 12 May 2011 Houston lost again and its salt lake next so not hopeful and the following game is NY which I'll be attending. Excited to see old friends and it should be a great trip.
Bridge Posted 12 May 2011 Author Posted 12 May 2011 Seriously - three games and only five goals scored? It's getting a bit embarrassing. It must be the brilliant defensive planning of MLS coaching brain trusts..couldn't have anything to do with the Stoke like plan of attempting to break the leg of anyone who shows an inkling of skill or daring. 10 coaches set off from Portland Saturday afternoon for Seattle & the first Cascadia Derby match of the season. As long as we all smile at the Shittle security and supporters..convincing them they invented supporters culture & "soccer" in the USA everything will go fine, otherwise who knows.
Simmo86 Posted 17 May 2011 Posted 17 May 2011 It ended 1-1. Don't really pay the MLS alot of attention but it seems like the Yanks are starting to get Football at bit more now
Bridge Posted 17 May 2011 Author Posted 17 May 2011 It was an epic away day..very happy with a point from the evil empire. The tifo display was quite brilliant even though I hate to admit it. The only down side was leaving my rain gear on the coach, as it couldn't have rained any harder!

docho66 Posted 19 May 2011 Posted 19 May 2011 I'm loving the fact that Americans have latched onto Football in the way they have! Maybe, just maybe in a few years "soccer" might be as big as "football" over there. Even though the MLS is a massive money hungry corporation, who can say that FIFA, UEFA and EPL aren't anymore! = / Let's not be hypocrites now... = P
purpleronnie Posted 19 May 2011 Posted 19 May 2011 Flying out today, looking forward to the trip. I hope I can get to see the portland match, I've got a crazy schedule made even worse with the news yesterday I recieved from head office that I now have a meeting 3 hours before I'm suppose to leave for dallas. I may miss that game now.
