AmyLGK Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 hi all, I bet this topic has been done before, but I couldn't find anything after a quick scout about. Just read i lovely piece in the Guardian (link below) about a Sweedish footballer who is officially the only openly gay man in the game. He's happy as is his family and has the full support of his team and majority of fans. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/mar/29/anton-hysen-afraid-coming-out I still find it so sad that footballers feel they can't be themselves when the majority of us just don't care if someones gay or not. No-one bats an eye-lid in other professions so why should it matter in football. I know people are concerned about what would happen in the changing room (will they be eying up other guys, should they have separate changing rooms)...but I'm sure that reason is not good enough for people to live a lie!?!? What are peoples thoughts?
Jackirius Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 I don't really see why you should have to come out and announce your sexual preference. If you're gay you're gay, if you are straight you are straight, i don't really care either way, you shouldn't have to announce it and it shouldn't be held against you whatever you are. What annoys me is that if a footballer or other sportsman 'comes out' then it is pasted all over the front pages, does it really matter that much?

No I completely agree that there is no need to make a big song and dance about it, but people are actively hiding their sexuality for the real fear that people knowing will end their careers. That's totally out of order!

That's totally out of order! Yep it is sad that people have to hide it from others, society is so acceptable these days that they shouldn't even have to feel the need to hide who they are, i'm pretty sure their main fear will be the media and the bloody fuss that they will cause and not their team mates and colleagues.
Guest Bilo Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 I like to think, that in 2011, that the majority of fans would support any professional who came out and treat him just as they treated him before. The reality though would probably be very different. English football has largely cast off the racial prejudices that blighted the game in the 1970s and 1980s, save for a few isolated incidents, but to be gay is perhaps the last taboo. You only need look at what Graeme Le Saux was put through when it was only rumoured he was gay, as well as homophobic abuse towards Sol Campbell, to see that a gay footballer's life would be made very difficult by many fans on the terraces. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe football fans are inherently homophobic, but you just know that some fans would consider anti-gay chants towards a rival footballer to be 'banter.' If for example a Forest player came out as gay before Good Friday, I can all but guarantee a fair number of our fans would absolutely slaughter him at the City Ground and the reverse would apply as well. I'd argue you'd have to be a very brave man to come out in this climate, and I have no doubt whatsoever that there are gay footballers in the game today, but I can't blame them for staying in the closet.
Stevosevic Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 I'm not bothered about if a person is gay or not, but maybe it just so happens that there are very few footballers who are gay? That hard to believe?
Mee Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 As long as he bags 30 a season, i'm not complaining....! Who cares if he his gay? Doesn't effect the way he kicks a ball, does it?
MikeyT Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 As long as he bags 30 a season, i'm not complaining....! Who cares if he his gay? Doesn't effect the way he kicks a ball, does it? Totally agree. As long as he plays well and gives his all each game i couldn't care less.
Fox You Forest Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 Doesn't effect the way he kicks a ball, does it? No, just the way he sucks them.
stix Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 As long as he T-bags 30 a season, i'm not complaining....! Who cares if he his gay? Doesn't effect the way he kicks a ball, does it?
Mee Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 No, just the way he sucks them. I had a feeling it would get a response like that... sooo...
BoneDog Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 Who cares if he his gay? Doesn't effect the way he kicks a ball, does it? Yes it does affect the way he kicks a ball. Gays kick the ball like this : (that guy in the clip is not a gay, it's just an example of how a gay would kick a football)
FoxyPV Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 I don't see what the problem is. There's not like a good team orgy in the showers after a match to cheer you up.
Jackirius Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 PV is the sort of person you need to be wary of in the showers mack.
Mee Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 PV is the sort of person you need to be wary of in the showers mack. So that wasnt shower gel he told me to wash my arse with...?
acooling08 Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 Gays and football don't tend to mix in my experience. I know a handful of openly gay people at school and they'd never want to join in with us playing football at lunch. (So this guy could actually be the only gay player). If a forest player came out as gay I'd join in the banter no doubt

I'm afraid not, he's a crafty one that PV.

Bugg Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 Acooling, maybe these openly gay people don't want to play football because: a) They aren't interested in football. or b) They think you're a cunt
Guest Bilo Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 They say you get more right-wing as you get older. How fvcking right-wing is acooling going to be when he's 40?!
FoxyPV Posted 31 March 2011 Posted 31 March 2011 PV is the sort of person you need to be wary of in the showers mack. I'm just trying to make sure my teammates are all ok after each match. So that wasnt shower gel he told me to wash my arse with...? Too young. Gays and football don't tend to mix in my experience.
