davieG Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 http://www.givemefoo...story-april-27? Leicester in Red Leicester City defeat Liverpool 1-0 to at Hillsborough in the FA Cup semi final, with Mike Stringfellow heading in the winner. Mike began his career at Mansfield Town whom he joined as a schoolboy in 1957 and was the star in Mansfield's youth team, signing a professional contract in February 1960, shortly after his 17th birthday. He scored 12 goals in 65 appearances for the Stags, before moving to Leicester City for £25,000 in January 1962 – the highest transfer-fee ever paid for an 18-year-old at the time. Leicester legend Dave Gibson recalled: "Leicester were looking for someone to play on the left alongside Mike, who they had recently signed. I was spotted at Parkhead, playing for Hibs and the scout phoned manager Matt Gillies and told him 'I've found the player to play alongside Stringfellow'." Dave struck an instant rapport down the left channel. "We just clicked from day one," he said. "Mike was a flying left winger who could catch pigeons. I got a lot of credit for feeding him the passes, but it was Mike who made my passes look good." Mike also scored one of the goals when the Foxes won the League Cup the following season with a 4–3 aggregate win against Stoke City. In retirement, he ran pubs in Narborough and Littlethorpe before owning a newsagent's in Enderby. 1901
Fosse Boy Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 That kit is gorgeous. From what I've been told there's no justice that our club only won one major honour in the Gillies era.
Guest Bilo Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 Massively close to winning the double in the 62-63 season. I think from reading that we were actually top of the league when we made the FA Cup Final and most expected us to kick on and win both. Then we lost four on the spin in the league and the FA Cup Final in spite of being quite heavy favourites. Though by all accounts, that was a very good team.
Fosse Boy Posted 27 April 2011 Posted 27 April 2011 Odd to see Leicester in red and Liverpool in sky blue Yeah that is weird. Know it was always the tradition that both clubs changed kits in the Cup if they clashed but no necessity for it there. Ah well, always nice to see a photo of Red Leicester.

Never won much, but we were always there or thereabouts. It annoys me sometimes when people rag on about o'neill. Sure he was a great manager, but the gillies era is disgacefully overlooked.

Ah well, always nice to see a photo of Red Leicester. Here you go We really are one the major underachievers in English Football. It's tragic that we've never won the FA Cup or the League.
davieG Posted 28 April 2011 Author Posted 28 April 2011 Odd to see Leicester in red and Liverpool in sky blue That's a Man City player, the picture is there to show Stringy not to represent the game in question.

davieG Posted 28 April 2011 Author Posted 28 April 2011 Ah alright. Couldn't see the badge so just assumed. Easily done. In case anyone is wondering the other player in the background is Bobby Roberts.
stockyfox Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 For the record: Leicester: Banks; Sjoberg, Norman; McLintock, Ian King, Appleton (Captain); Riley, Cross, Keyworth, Gibson, Stringfellow. Colours: Blue Shirts, White Shorts Liverpool: Lawrence; Byrne, Moran; Milne, Yeats (Captain), Stevenson; Callaghan, Hunt, St.John, Melia, Lewis. Colours: Red Shirts, White Shorts Goal: Stringfellow 7 mins. 'Never in the history of Leicester City Football Club have so many owed so much to so few' 'This was their finest hour' 'At the going down of the tunnel and in the days, weeks and years to come, we will remember them'.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 28 April 2011 Posted 28 April 2011 Easily done. In case anyone is wondering the other player in the background is Bobby Roberts. Remember this game so very well. Probably my favourite match ever. The atmosphere was electric, and the 'Filberts' support massive. I had little voice left after the game, and when 'Beanpole' (Stringfellow), headed that ball in, I went ballistic. (Never been the same since). My football rattle was red hot afterwards. Still have it. Davie Gibson, our Scottish international inside left, and Mike were brilliant in tandem together, and to watch them was like poetry in motion. Yes, that is Bobby Roberts also in the picture. He was a truly solid right half,, bought from Motherwell for £40,000 , I think . Big money for us. in those days. He was the replacement for Frank Mclintock, who had moved to Arsenal. Bobby had a fantastically powerful right foot. Great day, eh Davie G.?
