carterfox90 Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 i played against gary mills when i was younger as he was from a village near where i iive he played center forward then & run rings round us & scored for fun but great right back for leicester def my choice tho the cross grayson put over for walshy to score that day at wembley against the scum was pure class!!!
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 29 May 2011 Posted 29 May 2011 Gary Mills every time. I seem to remember Grayson as being a bit rubbish for the early part of his time with us. I think he was played in various positions, though, before settling at right back.

Earlydoorsjones Posted 31 May 2011 Posted 31 May 2011 Gary Mills has got to be one of City's most underrated players of "recent" times. Signing Mills was one of David Pleat's finest contribution as a City manager - there were not many others. His CV before City was very impressive as well - playing for For35t during their most successful spell ever. I seem to remember that Mills won player of the year and players player of the year several times for Us - and he was a very decent captain before Walsh made it his own. I also remember that towards the mid point of his time with Us, Mills played mostly at right back but his pre-City career was spent on the wing, in midfield and as a forward (positions that he also played in for City during his time). When he played at right back, he was always getting forward to add an extra man in attack - or even running with the ball down the wing and making the attacking situations himself. He provided the width on the right from right back whilst Tommy Wright gave City width on the left - but from a more advanced position. Mills gave the City team at that time balance. His ability to cross a ball was first class and he had superb first touch. Whilst Grayson was a solid and dependable utility player, he fitted into the right back spot when age got the better of Mills - he did a job, and eventually did enough to make the right back spot his. Grayson did not get forward as much as Mills and never looked as comfortable on the ball, but he has supplied some truly crucial and momentous crosses in his time for the Club. Grayson was very dependable at right back - he always put a shift in (and a few of 'our' current squad of players could learn a thing or two from the old timers like Grayson) and covered a lot of ground. He was a good tackler and played sensible balls - he did everything as should be done. The City side at the time needed players like Grayson; players that could adapt to gaps in the side - and he performed admirably anywhere he played. He also played for City in the first tier of English football at a time when money was being pumped into the game, and teams were able to go out and buy right backs (or players in any position) from around Europe. Grayson performed very well in comparison to the other right backs around at the time. Had the City team had a bit more strength in depth, Grayson may have played more in midfield. Or, had more money been available at the time, I think a natural right back would have been bought to allow a decent midfield holding player to develop his career in his more suitable position. When he moved on to the Villa and Blackburn (...and Blackpool), he returned to a grafting role in midfield - and played superbly. I am really pleased that Grayson's managerial career is successful as he is one of the old boys that I admire as a result of his service with our Club. I remember the Fox doing a resume of City managers and Brian Little's most 'successful' tactic was to shift players around like lego bricks. Neither Mills nor Grayson were natural right backs. Both did sterling service in City shirts in this position. Mills was the better right back and Grayson was the better 'boss man' in midfield. ...Had Kyle Naughton played for City for longer, he would have developed into a true City Legend and there would be no doubt about the best right back of recent times. He has been outstanding in the short time he has played for Us but I am never sure if you can include a player that has not served a full season with the Club.
