That lad from Japan Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Just watched the TV coverage of the derby game for the first time, and i still can't believe how good we were, but I don't understand what went wrong after. The movement, ease of control and pressing that took place in that first half for some reason went missing for the rest of the season. I don't think teams wised up to us because I don't think it was really stoppable. Anyway is this what is expected next season or is that setting the bar too high? Will our style change? What is expected?
Mack Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Personally all these questions seem impossible to answer with such a large change of playing personnel expected this summer.

Corky Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 It shows what we can do when we put our minds to it (and also when the oppostion are awful).
STEVIE B Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 .We were very good in that 1st half, but Derby were poor. Most teams we played during the post Xmas period were awful ( Donny,Barnsley,Millwall ) and we looked very good against them. Against the better teams ( Cardiff,Norwich,Reading ) we were well beaten. I would love to see us as a more solid unit and 'up' our game against good sides. No reason why we can't improve hugely if Sven gets new players in early enough to have a long pre-season. Would prefer not to have too many loanees though !!

What is expected? IMO we're the Championship equivalent of Man City (with slightly less talent). Both have had an influx of good players but everyone knows you can't just buy a team. If you chuck them together there are going to be times when they all perform to their capabilities at the same time (Derby first half is a prime example) but a lot of the time they will play in fits and starts which is what we have seen this season. With time and a settled team it's still a promising era. I wouldn't be too disappointed if we failed to go up next season IF we continued to build on the core of the team, showed even more potential and a bit more consistency. Despite this I feel the owners might feel differently and this will be a big season for Sven. I hope they stick with him for 1 more year if we fail to go up this season.
Victory is mine Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 Yep that was a cracking display, Hopefully we will be even better than that next season

Its about building a team. Money helps but then it's managerial prowess that's the difference between success and failure
Victory is mine Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 When we won this game i actually thought we had a chance of getting the play offs then relised it was derby
acooling08 Posted 28 May 2011 Posted 28 May 2011 For me it's not how we play when dominant, it's how we respond to pressure and physical sides which we haven't done well this season.
shailen Posted 29 May 2011 Posted 29 May 2011 I think we were found out by rest of the championship in this game. Derby gave us too much respect 1st half, not pressing us and we punished them. Second half though they did the opposite and although they didnt score it was effective. All other teams reliased that they shouldnt let us play our game, if they have a chance of winning. Finally i dont blame the defence were the amount of goals we have let in this season. I think its the midfields fault. Too often or not, and too early in games we push the full backs and midfield up to attack that it leaves our defence fully exposed and vulnerable to attack. The key signing i think will be a defensive midfielder like hargreaves!
Bettsj2 Posted 29 May 2011 Posted 29 May 2011 We were sublime in that game there's no doubt. The problem was that during Sven's tenure, we hadn't had a poor patch of form and it came after that game until the end of the season unfortunately. During the course of the season we beat 3 of the top 6 and also took 4 points from Leeds who occupied a top 6 spot until the last 2 weeks of the season. The rhetoric about us not being able to beat the top sides is not true, it's just unfortunate that the games that we did lose against the top 6 teams came at a time when we'd hit a bad patch of form and were at the business end of the season.
