Backpacking in South Africa

Recommended Posts

Anyone been backpacking before?

I'm off to South Africa for 3 months from August. I'm planning to start in Cape Town and then travel along the coast, to fly back from Jo'burg.

Currently in the dilemma of choosing what (not) to take in my 55L rucksack!

Obviously your bag contains EVERYTHING and unless you could trust leaving it somewhere (not likely in hostels etc!) I guess I'll be tethered to it for the whole 88 days?

I still bought a season ticket despite the fact that I'll be missing 7/8 home games. Dedication

Any advice / suggestions!? :chant:

Take much less stuff than you think you need. Make sure you have day pack which will hold everything you care about, then you can leave everything else in hostels and so on and enjoy yourself without worrying about it.

And generally don't take anything which you will be really upset to lose, or in other words assume that at some point all your stuff will get nicked.

Been to South Africa and Backapacked for 6 months last year.

One Pair of shoes and a decent pair of thongs (flip flops), One or two dress shirts then just t-shirts, a couple of jumpers, a decent jacket (preferable light weight and water proof) a couple of pairs of jeans and shorts. A mini first aid kit will help mainly consisting of panadol, diarhea pills, vitamins and immune boosters.

Pre-Paid travel cards are the best.

South Africa is awesome just remember it is very poor and to a fair chunk of the population you will be considered very wealth. So have your wits about you at all times, be extremly careful who you trust. We had one bloke try to set us up and it just started by him chatting with us getting in a round with us then 4 hours later he was setting us up to rob and kill us. A mate pulled a bird went to do the dead with her only to find there was a guy waiting for him with a gun who took his money. Stay in groups, pre arrange prices for taxis and make sure they are not drug fooked first. Stay in groups at night time.

Positives it's dirt cheap, great cultue shock, alot of people are really friendly, some great beaches and scenary.

Not trying to put you off but just always be careful and you will have a blast. If you get time head to Botswanna one of my fav countries in the world

I've not got a day pack yet - a basic low profile rucksack would do I'm guessing? Just enough to hold a bottle of water, cash / cards, passport and phone.

Yep, got my mini first aid kid and appropriate dress (microfleeces etc). Also got myself a Caxton FX prepaid card.

Guns, birds and drugs - GREAT! No, I think I'm sensible and hope to have enough about me to avoid that sort of thing! I'd be an easy target though.

Cheers.
