Leicester's summer spending spree will be enough to win them the Championship title, according to Robbie Savage.

The former midfield enforcer believes that Sven Goran Eriksson's experience, combined with the talent he has been able to assemble at the newly-renamed King Power Stadium will be enough to see off rivals including West Ham and Reading.

"At the end of the day, it's the team that's spent the most money and that's why I think Leicester will do so well."

Leicester have been the most prolific spenders in the npower leagues this summer. Eriksson has assembled a team of big name stars including John Pantsil, Gelson Fernandes, Darius Vassell, Sean St. Ledger, Matt Mills, David Nugent, Kasper Schmeichel and Neil Danns, as well as loaning players like Michael Johnson and Yakubu.

"You need a bit of experience and a bit of youth," Savage told MSN Sport.

"I think West Ham will go straight back up...West Ham with Kevin Nolan have the best players in the Championship, you know.'

Sam Alladyce has been brought in by the club's owners to end the inconsistency and fragility of Avram Grant's reign but Savage points out that even with the talent available, promotion will be a scrap.

"It's not as easy to get out of the Championship as you think. Two games a week, anything can happen, look at Scunthorpe beating QPR in the last few games.'

Having backed one former club to go up, Savage fears that another team from of his past could be heading in the opposite direction. He lists Derby along with Doncaster, Peterborough, Coventry and Crystal Palace as at risk of ending in the relegation zone.

"You've gotta look at the teams that were down there last year. It's going to be a huge season for them [Derby], they need one or two more bits of experience but they are going to struggle this year. They've got a great young manager but I think it's going to be struggle for them."

Savage retired from football while at Derby at the end of last season. The Rams finished in 19th place, just 7 points away from the drop, however fans will be hoping signings such as Frank Fielding, Nathan Tyson and Jason Shackell should help to push the club up the league.

Another of Savage's former clubs, Birmingham City, were also relegated at the end of last season and have since lost their manager Alex McLeish to rivals Aston Villa. Along with this, there has been a mass exodus of talent from the squad; players such as Barry Ferguson, Lee Bowyer, Rodger Johnson, Craig Gardener and Ben Foster.

"It was my favorite time as a player with Birmingham. Obviously they've gone down and I just feel for them. I don't know what's going to happen." Savage said.

Since when did we get Yakubu back?! :o

This must be a ghost writer, I can't imagine Savage mashing his forehead against a keyboard and words magically appearing on the screen. He must have one helluva an autocorrect on his pooter.

I have always liked Savage, doesn't take life to seriously ( see hair style as proof ) and everytime i hear him talk about City it's always positive.

It was drawn to my attention that he used his acerbic wit to shoot down a vociferous harridan after a protracted argument on Twitter. He soared in my estimation after that, I enjoyed the tale a lot. biggrin.gif

Very true, apart from the Man City game on ESPN last season when he tried to crawl up Mancini's arse!!
