This week has given us a little break, then when we come back we've got five games before the next international break, by which time we want to really be gelling as a team and looking like we belong right up there," said the 31-year-old playmaker.

"The more we play with each other, the better we'll become. You could see that with Southampton when we played them last week - they had that connection where they could play one or two-touch and read each other's play.

"Everyone's so desperate to do well, but it's not always a good thing being so desperate because you end up trying too hard and doing the wrong things. We're all experienced players and once we start knowing each other's games we'll be a good side.

Wellens can see the City side beginning to gel.

"We've just got to focus on playing together, gelling as a team, keep nicking wins when we're not playing well and then, when we do start playing well, we can get some really good performances in."

Wellens weighed in with his first goal of the season in the win over the Saints - a brilliant strike from range and only his second this calendar year.

It's a side to the game he says everyone needs to contribute to this season, but no more important than keeping the back door shut.

"You need goals from midfielders and defenders," Richie said. "Your bread and butter will always be your strikers, but if we can get midfielders chipping in with goals in 1-0 wins, which Andy King did a lot last season, then that will help.

"What we've got to do at the moment though, is stop conceding them, we can't keep doing that.

"If we can keep more clean sheets then one goal is enough to win any game."

Always love to hear/read when Wellens talks. He has a great footballing brain and really knows what he is on about, the post match interview after Southampton for example.
