Sven's non attacking fullbacks

Why has Sven gone with two non attacking full backs? With sven's reliance on the narrow 433 formation and after the success of a player like naughton last year as well as the banishment to the reserves of a class act like Berner,  I would've thought it would've been a key area for Sven to fill with forward thinking players? Instead we get a less than steady eddie in Konchesky on one side and a mistake waiting to happen, stay in your own half Pantsil on the other. With backup coming from a tubby Ball and a currently reluctant attacker in Peltier, I'm somewhat confused, as no doubt is Berner who was better going forward than he was ever given credit for.

Behave mate. Berner at his age is never going to be 'class' these days. If you're seriously considering Konchesky as a non-attacking full-back then you've missed a lot. Which clearly you have.

People complained that our full backs were too attacking, now that we have full backs who's main priority is defence it isn't good enough

Some people are never happy.

The only full back we are missing is Naughton, who is Premier League quality so naturally we would.

Konchesky is fine.

That's funny buddy well done.

Not as funny (pointless) as this thread.

Why not choose one of the many, many other bitchfest threads to air your concerns?

You don't lose class mate. I am seriously considering Konchesky as non attacking fullback because that's what he's been throughout his career. You've clearly missed a lot.

Konchesky has got forward with decent regularity so far and, granted I've only seen him play once, but Paintsil has hardly stayed back permanently, he's got forward and supported the midfield.

If you don't like the thread, just leave. There wouldn't be a bitchfest if we weren't playing so poorly.

It was to sort the defence out

and it's working a treat

No, wait...

Why don't you just 'support' another team? Cos every post i've read from you tonight (and previously) has just been moan whine moan bitch whine.

There's constructive criticism and then there's the drivel that you continuously spout.

And that's not just aimed at you, it's aimed at the other countless muppets who seem to thrive on negativity. It's funny that when we win certain posters make the odd grudgingly positive comment yet when we don't fare so well they're all over these boards like a ****ing rash.

I share your concern about the quality of our full backs. Many posters get very defensive for some reason and act like defence counsel in a murder trial. Fair criticism is reasonable.

How is Konchesky not an attacking full-back?

Just because his delivery isn't very good doesn't mean he isn't getting forward.

So if, pre season, you were told we were gonna be signing Konchesky and Pantsil as full backs you wouldn't have been pleased? No?

Or would you rather have the likes of Robbie Neilson tearing up the wings?

We needed replacement fullbacks, we tried for Naughton and couldn't get him back, I think those we signed were the best we could realistically get at this point.

I can see the merit of defensive full backs if they defend well and do their job and leave the attacking to the rest of the team but Konchesky and Pantsil appear to do neither.

As for how I felt when we signed them - I would rather see how they play before getting excited and then form an opinion. It now looks like we've got dead wood at the back and need to get some new full backs in or at least give Peltier a chance.

I don't have blind faith that things will turn out ok in the end but form an opinion as each match comes and goes. I don't see that I'm any less a "supporter" for taking that view.

I didn't say you were to be fair. If you're not happy with those two, could you suggest any alternatives we could have signed?

Again, I would assume (as I stated in another thread) that the bulk of fans were very happy to learn that we were getting full backs at the club such as peltier, konchesky and pantsil.

Now, a few weeks in and this excitement seems all forgotten in favour of questioning these signings.

The full backs aren't the problem.. It's how they are being used that is

And that's down to the manager and defensive coach.

The signings are still good ones, now the test of Sven and Fazzer is to get them showing what they can do

Spending money's been the easy bit......

I'm not the manager with a scouting system and professional support - it's their job to assemble a team to challenge for promotion.

Is Cunningham from Manchester City fit again?

Absolutely right, and the same can be said for the bulk of our signings. Very good players on paper, but for whatever reason, not playing to their potential for us.

The blame for that can only lie at the door of Sven and his coaching staff, just gotta hope they can work out how to get the best out of their signings, and quickly.

So was Liverpool's coaching system at fault for Konchesky's poor form?
