A polyp is a abnormal growth of tissue. Do you have one?

Just read on wikipedia that they can be (not are) discovered at the same time as some forms of cancer.

Theres more than one class, so it depends. I'm only reading this from wikipedia which may not even be true. I know you will be concerned, but don't jump to any conlusions.

Have a read though, when you get in.

You can get polyps in your nose, your lung, ovarian, uterus, pretty much anywhere there's a cavity, such as the intestinal tract. Most are just abnormal growth that certainly in the intestinal tract, dependant on where it is, will be removed through keyhole or the use of endoscopic surgery. Basically up your arse.

The polyp will then go out to a lab for tests.

The majority of polyps will result in no cancer, and sometimes if there is no good reason to remove them, some polyps can cause side effects, such as difficulty becoming pregnant (ovarian), or difficulty breathing or sleeping (nasal/sinus) and will be simply removed on that basis. I can only assume that they were found on endoscopic examination, as intestinal polyps don't necessarily cause symptoms, unless they are pretty large.

But essentially they are no different to abnormal external growths on the skin for example. They can be something or nothing. Usually they are nothing, but any history of bowel or intestinal cancer, they normal recommendation from GP's/consultants is to be checked out every so often from the age of 30+. And that means the old camera jobby and the elixir of doom, that is worse the the examination itself. 3 pints of the vilest concoction known to man to drink to send one's body into a human fecal tap. But I digress...

A polyp is an abnormal tissue growth which has a bud-like appearance. I take it you're referring to bowel polyps, which can be small or large and have different appearances. A polyp in itself is certainly not "cancer" - abnormal growth, or "dysplasia", is a characteristic of cancer, but not all dysplasia is cancerous. To put this into perspective, you may have heard of skin cancer being referred to as "malignant melanoma". There is such a thing as "benign melanoma", with which you'll be familiar - they're just moles. Moles are "dysplasia", but they are completely non-dangerous in that form. A polyp is to a cancerous bowel tumour what a mole is to a cancerous skin tumour - the harmless relative.

Polyps can, however, indicate a predisposition to cancer. A single polyp is unlikely to mean this. There is a gene called the APC gene which can be mutated and passed down from generation to generation, and which causes polyps to form. Lots of polyps. Carpets of them. This is something which the doctor would look for and explain. This genetic mutation represents one of the many events within the body's makeup which is required for a cancerous tumour to form. It is possible for a single polyp to undergo the sequence of events required to become cancer, just as it is possible for a regular mole to become cancerous, but it is unlikely.

I assume that the polyp was discovered by a doctor - I can't really think how one would self diagnose a polyp. As such, he should have a very clear idea of the risk to the person with the polyp(s), and he will give as much information as is required to understand the risk.

EDIT: I don't know so much about polyps elsewhere, but I believe they are even less likely to be a problem. In any case, they should be examined and assessed by a doctor.

Polyps are seldom cancerous so far as I'm aware.

There are eight types apparently, and only three have a possibility of being malignant.

He has done the right thing getting them checked out though.
