Collymore Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I just rang up and Sky and said I was leaving and managed to get my line rental and broadband for free for 9 months which is going to save me £180! Now I do this every year and so far it has paid off. last year I got multi room and HD half price for 6 months. I currently pay £63 and have everything other than Sports and Movies and this has took me down to £39 for the next 9 months! I don't think you can just ring up and ask for it (If someone asks and gets it us let us all know) I went through the heart stopping process of - "Hi I want to cancel my SKY" "Can I ask why Mr **** "Yes there's been a change in my circumstances and it's too expensive" "Well you could down grade your package and get rid off entertainment and HD" (I'm thinking shit she's got a point) "Well I've been looking at other companies like BT Vision (we both know they're a pile of crap) and Virgin (I hope shes doesn't put my postcode in the website and realise they offer no TV or fast broadband in my area) and they all have some good deals on at the moment" "OK Mr *****, I'll sort out your cancellation now" "<nervous> Thank you </>" "Actually Mr ****, what I could do is offer your broadband and line rental for free for 9 months" "(I don't want to seem too pleased about this) "Let me just get my calculator ....... (pretends to enter numbers) It's still going to be tight ..... (hopes she got more to offer)" "Well that's a pretty good saving Mr **** and is all I can do" "Oh well, go on then" Job done, one phone call has nearly saved me half a season ticket. Can I just say, PLEASE DON'T BLAME ME IF YOU END UP CANCELING YOUR CONTRACT - the nervous thank you part sees my balls hit the floor. I don't know how they calculate these things - I've been a sky customer for 4 years, never missed a payment and plowed a lot doe their way. Also you can't be tied in at all (hence I always do it annually) AGAIN DO BE CAREFUL but there is money to be saved.
FoxyPV Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 We did the same last year. Although, it was the girl on the phone talking to MsFoxy that said in a loud voice "so MsFoxy you want to move to Virgin" and then gave us loads of stuff at a knock down price.
I am Rod Hull Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I do the same thing, I got free line rental and half price broadband for a year, I have the Sky Sports package and I think my last bill was £63 (may have been less). I`m saving well over £250 a year. I`ll give it a few more weeks until I phone to tell them that I want to cancel my Sky TV so they can say "being as you`ve been such a good customer, we can offer you Sky Sports free for 6 months". :xmaswink:
ousefox Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Didn't realise Sky had gone up that much! As if people pay over £700 a year for it

m00nie Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 cant remember the last time we paid full for sky. started off with a friends and family code for half price sky for year, then switched names to partners. then either ring up and get the discount or they send a come back to us (as use mine and oh name so they send it to the one whos not curently in use) we have movies, sports and think 2 of the packs and pay £24 month.. was cheap enough we even kept ours when we had the chipped cable box..
dave the caveman Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 everything other than sports and movies, isn't that basically just freeview?
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I pay 69 a month. Fukin rip off, no internet or phone for that either
Jackirius Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I currently pay £63 and have everything other than Sports and Movies and this has took me down to £39 for the next 9 months!
I am Rod Hull Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I pay 69 a month. Fukin rip off, no internet or phone for that either Phone them up and say that you want to cancel your subscription, when they ask you why, just tell them that you cant afford it. They`ll offer you a deal you wont refuse :xmaswink:
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Knowing my luck theyd just cancel me! She insisted on Sky Movies though doesn't watch it. Not sure whether to trust you wtf nvq!
I am Rod Hull Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Trust me... I do it every year  they`d rather have £40 a month off you than nothing at all. What have you got to lose ? nothing.... Drop a few sob stories in there too, like having your drills robbed. (seriously)
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I spose so! And the ukranian flights to add to that!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 I'll do it tomorrow whilst she's at work. Let you know how it goes

Rincewind Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 Did similar with Virgin but I don't want a new contract ATM. Phone them up and said I wanted to reduce my package or look around for cheaper. Reduced my package from XL to free-view and Broadband the same. They said I would need a BT line for SKy or others. I had BT when I moved in the flat so still have the socket but there is the connection fees etc They said my broadband / phone was the lowest. If I take my Virgin X box off it will be another fiver saving but I'd have no catchup TV. I have cut the bill by around £15 PM. I really did want to cut my bill. The reduction will do for now until I have checked out other services. What grinds my gears is that if I was a new customer I would get a decent deal.
Collymore Posted 27 December 2011 Author Posted 27 December 2011 I bet there's a lot of people who don't have it - At £26 a month or whatever it is, I'd prefer to watch the games on the net any day of the week. It's good news that you won't need sports to watch the F1 next season too. Apparently you get the F1 HD channel under the HD package.

It's good news that you won't need sports to watch the F1 next season too. Apparently you get the F1 HD channel under the HD package. I love my cricket, footie, darts and whatever so its the only reason I have Sky but I understand that people have it for other things, I dont have movies for instance because I can DL them on torrent, months before Sky show them...
Rincewind Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 The only sport channel I have now is At The Races. Not even Sky sport news. Only one I watched really was ESPN and that was mainly foreign football. I think I'll manage without it. It is however a few pints extra in Weatherspoons. It may be permanent cuz I am happy with part time work and JSA until I qualify for pension credits. Even when I was working I probably overdid things.
Alexikokopops Posted 27 December 2011 Posted 27 December 2011 As broadband (especially) penetration has increased the market has become more and more saturated. As a result the cost of acquiring a customer has increased over the years, and so retention has become much more important. As a result Sky/Virgin Media/BT will always try and throw a bit of money at you to retain you, and so it's generally worth a try. It's also why there's been a recent trend towards above the line advertising (in the broadband/tv market) about the benefits for current customers, rather than the traditional "join us and pay fuck all for six years".
Lamby Posted 28 December 2011 Posted 28 December 2011 Sky are bastards, wanted my parents to pay insurance on the sky dish on the side of the house and said you had to have it and wouldn't take no for an answer, now back to Virgin since then

My box as gone gaga a couple of times and they`ve tried to sell me a new one until I said "I`ll have to cancel then"... You`ll get all the dishes and boxes you want for free if you threaten to cancel... Insurance my arse :xmaslaugh: My box went plop once (5 or 6 years ago) and i`d just got in from a night out (pissed), I phoned them up and a women on the other end said it would be £70/80 for a new one, to which i replied "thats not how it works is it, you give me one for free or lose £30 a month? I know you`ll send me one for nowt because you need my money (my Mrs in the back ground telling me to STFU :xmaslaugh:). I got the phone put down on me :xmasunsure: sorted it out the next day though... I`v had a new dish and 2 or 3 boxes for nowt over the years....
Rincewind Posted 28 December 2011 Posted 28 December 2011 The set box lasts about as long as a contract so they want you to take a new one for an updated version.
