Does someone who loves stats want something to do?

Hi Guys,

After yet another obvious refereeing error in the Nugent booking that should have been a penalty I was wondering if there was anyone out there who was a little bored and wanted to do a bit of investigating. Now I'm sure it isn't just us that have had a harsh deal this year, I am sure it has happened to lots of other teams as well but I really am curious to how many points theoretically bad refereeing has cost us this season. I actually think something was said to refs at the beginning of the season which has made them harsher on some challenges but then they dont follow the rules and always book when they should etc. I would be curious to know the difference in dodgy decisions, dodgy cards and points lost in this season compared to the last few. So all you wannabe Stato's, how about working this out and then delivering your findings.

Cheers

Gudjy

Unless employed as analysts at the club, none of us have time or inclination to study footage in that much detail, even if we had access to it.

The problem of weak match officials affects all clubs at all levels of the game, not just us. Using them as an excuse for failings seems too much like sour grapes.

How many points has not having a good midfield, defence also cost us,for the last time its not the referees that have cost us but our poor slung together side!

Can we just move on from this season. I know a lot of shit has gone against us, and refs have been piss poor to the majority of the games this season. Win or lose.

Absolutely, fook the referees, this season has been all about mis management, overpaid prima donnas and poor tactics. End of.

I can't think of many games where the Ref has obviously and directly cost us points. For example, the ref was shocking at the Middlesbrough home game, but I don't think anyone can say that we DEFINITELY would have won if not for him. Also take the penalty/dive situation with Nugent last night - if it had been given what would have happened next? A red card? would that have made a difference? a scored penalty? A missed penalty? Who knows?

Maybe if it was in the last minute we could say "yeah that made the difference"

But it always seems a bit pointless to think about the points differences caused by referees.

Not least because if you did it for every team that has received refereeing based injustice it would often even itself out.

For example you could give Leicester the following points from obvious bad refereeing:

2-2 vs Forest: Awful refereeing that definitely made the difference.

So let's be on 54 points instead then please.

But if we did it for everyone we'd have to take account of bad refereeing in our favour - for example, the 3rd goal against Soton at home - when Bamba climed all over Lambert when attacking a corner, forcing him into an own goal, clearly a goal that shouldn't have stood. We got poorer and poorer as the game went on, and Soton got better and better. We probably would not have won that game if we went into half time only 2-1 up.

So let's just assume that we would have drawn or lost - so thats 2 or 3 points taken from us. So now we're on 52 or 51 points.......back where we started.,
