The former Libyan intelligence officer convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people has died, his brother has said.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi died at home aged 59, his brother Abdulhakim told Reuters on Sunday. His health had deteriorated quickly after a long battle with cancer, Abdulhakim said.

East Renfrewshire council said they were investigating the claims of Megrahi's death.

Megrahi was the only man convicted of the bombing, which killed 270 people when Pan Am Flight 103 blew up over Lockerbie four days before Christmas in 1988.

He was sentenced to life in prison in 2001, but was released on compassionate grounds in August 2009 after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. At the time, doctors estimated he had around three months to live.

Since his return to Libya, Megrahi rarely appeared in public. His family has on several occasions said that he is near death, in what was seen as an attempt to justify his release.

Hope he died in absolute agony.

Released on 'compassionate' grounds. What a load of bullshit. He was involved in the murder of 270 people.

Should have been tortured to death 25 years ago.

No he wasn't. There are a few good books around that show what a farce the trial was. There are also books that show dodgy goings on from the moment of first response.

I'll just stick to the one book recommendation, and a link to a review. It's a brand new book with new evidence, only been out a couple of months.

Oh, and it was nothing to do with Gadaffi either.

I'm sure the people in Scotland/America who lost whole families agree.

Well some of them don't agree. Some (probably the ones who have researched) know that he was innocent.

Martin Cadman, 84, who lives in Burnham Market, Norfolk and lost his son Bill, 32, in the bombing said the trial which convicted Al Megrahi was a "farce".

"I'm very pleased he has been released on compassionate grounds because I don't think he was the right person to be there anyway. It is just righting a wrong.

Megrahi and Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah and others were accused together and Fhimah was not found guilty and Megrahi was, which didn't make sense. The trial was a farce.

I think he was innocent and he was not involved.

I don't believe he should have been in prison and I'm very pleased he will be back home with his family very soon."

I know, it would have taken Derek Acorah to know in 1987 that he was planning to do something the following year.

Maybe it is a preventative measure, torture to death everyone before they do something wrong, just in case.
