I left David Llyod 6 months ago and then joined Pure. For the price of it per month it's ok (£17.99) The only downside it's hasn't got a swimming pool and jacuzzi which I normally have after a workout.

Plus point it's open 24/7 which is good for me as I have to work 3 shifts so I'm not normally there at peak times. It's got free on site parking. Also you are not tied into any contract.

On a whole I'd definitely recommend it specially for what price it is per month.

I class gyms such as Pure Gym, Klik Fitness and The Gym Group (budget) gyms as the 'Motel' of the gym world.

It's not the Savoy, it's cheap and you get what you pay for... A gym, no crappy extras like pool/sauna/steam/spa to pay for... They're not health clubs, they're gyms. The lack of a contract and 24/7 opening is good and was perfect for me. I even work in one. They don't suit everybody though.

Some people want the luxury and status of a Health Club such as David Lloyd, Bannatynes, Fitness First etc and some people need heavier weights like at the Olympia Gym and Warehouse Gym.

They're good, but it does depend on what you're after.

(I have tried to be impartial here as I work for one of the gyms that I have mentioned)

£49.99 a month and the only thing different with David Llyod was that you had a pool, jacuzzi and sauna. Definitely not worth the extra £32 a month.

I'm considering joining a gym again. Would have to be a 24-hour one because of the shifts i work. There are 2 in Leicester right?

Any opinions/reviews of said gyms would be much apprecieted. Would probably be after a gym more weights/free weights biased but so long as the dumbells go higher than 15Kg i could manage the rest!!

For the majority of people, the novelt of the pool/sauna etc soon wears off and people end up not using it.

Also, as health clubs have so many different membership schemes you will be in the changing room and the guy next to you could be paying 50% less than you!

Yes there is 'Pure Gym' on Walnut St and 'The Gym' on Causeway Lane (behind next in the Highcross).

The Gym is £20 one off sign up fee, £10.99 per month, no contract, open 24hrs, the Dumbells go up to 30kg and we obviously have a power rack and smith machine. Along with a couple of extra free bars and static bars.

It's probably obvious which one I work for!

Ok thanks. Its good to hear you have a Smith machine as alot of the 'fitness' gyms i have been to dont have one. Would love my own but current circumstances dont allow it. Will give The Gym a go then. £11 is well worth it. I havent been for quite a while but at £11 it seems like a good place to get started again until i'm happy enough with my progress & ability to get back down to the Meathead gym i used to go to!! lol

Thanks for your help Andy.

A smith machine and 30kg dumbells.... Ronnie Coleman better watch out...

But seriously, max 30kg dumbells is ****ing pathetic.

Its a start though. The only time i would need heavier than 30Kg in the next 6 months would be for shrugs. I would imagine they are catering more for the casual user & not the musclehead fanatic where weights are concerned anyway.

I've been a member of pure gym for about 7 months now and for the price cannot reccommend it enough.

The only thing I would like is of course a pool and a jacuzzi, however, for the price of an extra £25 it is not worth it.

The plus points of the gym;

- easy to get to with plenty of free parking (they have recently arranged to get more parking on the waste ground next to filbert street')

- open 24/7, I don't usually go past 10pm but for the few times I have it has been great. Some of my friends who go to Greens for example wish their gym was 24 hours or open later.

- Lots of classes from as early as 6.30am to late with good, friendly staff.

- Good clean changing facilities

The free weights area has a good selection of weights, however, currently is undergoing work so can be very cramped at peak times. If you are going to choose pure gym make sure you look at the signing up offers for other gyms across the UK. I signed up to pure gym birmingham cause they waived the signing up fee but you can still access any gym in the uk which is good. Hope this helps!

The majority of people I've seen at the various gyms I have been to aren't fit anyway, unless you count being able to do 6 minutes on a cross-trainer on level 1 before going for a lucozade and chat as being fit.

Wouldn't use it if you can afford to go to a better gym. The free weights section (which you will want to be using) is pretty tiny. Has two barbells on squat racks that get used for bench press most of the time, so it can be a bit annoying waiting to use the barbells if you want to do Deadlifts, bench and squat in a row.
