Poor Form not a Recent Blip

Recommended Posts

After 12 games of the season we were top of the table with 25 points, since then we have taken 33 points from 24 games, hardly the form of a promotion chasing side, in fact our from over the last 24 games (if we started the league from game 13) places us 11th, 6 points off the play-offs and 13 points of the automatic promotion spots. The top 4 teams of the last 24 games are Watford, Cardiff, Hull & Palace, the current top 4 in the League.

Middlesbro, Blackburn, Wolves & Huddersfield also were in the top 7 after 12 games. Technically we have been a top 6 side all season, but the form for the majority of it doesn't justify it, merely propped up by the benefit of an excellent start to the season that we haven't been able to sustain.

We still have a play-off chance, but on the form of the last 24 games indicates we are likely to pick up only 13 or 14 points, will 71 or 72 be enough, probably not, I think more than likely 75 points will be required.

Press speculation on Nigel Pearson being under pressure is likely to be accurate, Sven was fired after taking 35 points from his last 27 games at the Club, a very similar run to that we are currently on?

I take issue from this in many arguments. If, if if. The fact is, the season didn't start on game 13 and we have to judge Pearson based on all of his time here, in which we've certainly progressed.

Pearson mk2 has played 76 Won 34 Drawn 17 Lost 25 (inc cup)

Considering the resources at his disposal, we should be comfortable in the top 2 places, its not a crisis of confidence we lack, its mental strength, BOTTLE, that's not something as a team you acquire you either have it or you don't. Pearson has built a squad that is melting away before your eyes under the pressure of the business end of the season. (THAT) is the real truth of it.

To my mind Pearson was wrong in his starting line up for the Huddersfield away Cup tie presumably thinking that as we had thrashed them 6-1 at home in the league he could rest Nugent & Wood leaving them on the bench. This decision backfired. What he should have done is to have started with his strongest line up got 2/3-0 up and then bring players off if he thought they needed resting.

As it happened we drew 1-1 and then had an extra game the resultant and appalling replay. Apart from the result against Blackburn we've done pretty poorly and with losses against lowly placed P'boro, Charlton, Ipswich and now Wendy plus draws against Blackpool & Leeds you can see why a) we're no longer second and b) in real danger of falling out of the play-off positions.

Pearson is not firing the players up and the game yesterday illustrated a lack of desire and passion to win a game that should have been there fr the taking. Folk were saying after the point retrieved against Leeds how important that would be. Not a bit of it it is the 16 point loss illustrated above which will condemn us to another season in the Championship!!

That's a worthwhile point to raise. Our form has become steadily worse over the season, with one or two upward 'blips'. Our performances are totally unrecognizable from earlier in the season. We're currently on relegation form and are relying on another upward blip to save our season.
