Guest MattP Posted 8 April 2013 Posted 8 April 2013 I've said this before but I left school with no GCSE's (They were only available to the top two forms at my school) and worked in a hosiery factory for around 35 years in a non-skilled job. Then I spent seven years in security leaving me at the age of 59 with no job and no qualifications. It would be difficult to get any company to re-train me as I could have illnesses more often or retire at 65. Since being unemployed I have taken an ECDL and a food hygien course passing both. These were mainly for myself though for something to do in the hope it would improve the look of my CV. I now have a part-time job which I can do abeit only five hours PW. I also qualify for Pension Credits in July. I could stay on JSA for the same amount as PC while being required to look for work. With PC I would not be required to search for work but will be off JSA. Which of the two options would be best for me and the working taxpayer? Could you even begin the imagine the qualifications you could have obtained using the time spent to post nearly 11,000 posts on here?

What about the kids who are brought up to play the system and never work? Is that right, too? Is that fine? I know it's not. There are some playing the system but many cannot get jobs for one reason or another. I recently attended a 'GOALS' course and they were saying the majority of jobs can be obtained from off jobsites means. Friends, calling in and internal if you do a lesser role at the place. Placing job ads costs company's around £1000 a time and have up to and sometimes above 50 applicants per vacancy with many of them being unsuitable because the pressure on the jobseeker by the job centre to apply for any job. Also many of the applicants have learning disabilities, disabled, ex-offenders and other drawbacks preventing them getting even the most meaniable jobs.

The world needs teachers, and I don't think anyone acting out of rational self interest would become a teacher. She would probably be pleased by my personal motivations, though.

Certainly agree with your sentiment regarding teachers - after 2 years in the UK teaching industry you couldn't bring me back to it now with a CEO's salary. Find whoever keeps doing it or going into it amazing. As an aside, you might get a kick out of the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. It's fantasy stuff, but the political stuff in there would be right up your alley, I reckon.
