WhatsHisName Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 It's ridiculous. Not only are many at work or shopping on Saturdays, but for it to be on a Saturday causes a lot of traffic problems for many who have to work on that day. Also if it was on a Sunday, a LOT more people would turn up to it for it. For many of us the Caribbean Carnival is a pain, when we could really enjoy it on a Sunday
promised land Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 I was up at Boro yesterday but I take it, it went off as Victoria Park looked like the day after a festival this morning. I remember one year back in the mid 90's I went to buy a car off Stoughton Drive, shot up London Road without a problem and not knowing the carnival was on that day. Saw the car, paid a deposit, then coming home down London Road it was utter mayhem, after that I vowed never to be on the roads anywhere near the place in future years.
Rincewind Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 There is always a bit of a party afterwards at the Afro-Carebean Centre. And it goes on quite late at Viccy Park. Also people come from all over England. I can see how it can be an inconvenience though.
WhatsHisName Posted 4 August 2013 Author Posted 4 August 2013 after that I vowed never to be on the roads anywhere near the place in future years. That is how many of us feel, the Carnival makes things so difficult for so many of us
Bilbo Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 That is how many of us feel, the Carnival makes things so difficult for so many of us So what's the alternative? Never hold any sort of event in the city? It's one day out of the year.
Captain... Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 So what's the alternative? Never hold any sort of event in the city? It's one day out of the year. I thought the alternative was obvious, have it on a Sunday, less traffic, less people working, less problems, more fun.
Bilbo Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 I thought the alternative was obvious, have it on a Sunday, less traffic, less people working, less problems, more fun. Whatever day of the weekend it's on the amount of traffic will be bad what with the sheer volume of people it attracts and people will still moan that they visit family on a Sunday etc etc. The point I was making is that it's one day of the year so people should just put up with it. Try living in London where there is a major event every other weekend.
MikeyT Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 Have to agree with Bilo. It's only one day a year. No matter what day it's held on, the roads will be busy. Not only with local people but people from all around.
WhatsHisName Posted 4 August 2013 Author Posted 4 August 2013 I thought the alternative was obvious, have it on a Sunday, less traffic, less people working, less problems, more fun. Would they ever have the Notting Hill Carnival on a Saturday ? Of course not as i t would a silly thing to do, but here in Leicester...
AyewJoking Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 yeah but you cant get rat arsed on the sunday if you have work on the monday which is what the carnival is all about.
Rincewind Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 yeah but you cant get rat arsed on the sunday if you have work on the monday which is what the carnival is all about. Thats what I was thinking. I worked with someone who was involved. He was West Indian. He started at around 9am at The Burlington and got home some time on the Sunday. Needed the Monday to recover. Had one or two pints a few rums and lots of reggae dancing with beautiful girls.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 4 August 2013 Posted 4 August 2013 I echo Bilo, I've just got back from Manchester where they are doing the SkyRide today and the city is still absolutely choc-a-block.
Captain... Try living in London where there is a major event every other weekend.I already do.My point was he was suggesting moving it to a Sunday, but somebody overreacted and started going on about cancelling it. Saturday or Sunday makes no difference to me, but if it would get more visitors on a Sunday, with less people working, then it could be a good thing. Does anyone know why it is a Saturday? Is there a reason for it? Is it any good? Went years ago and thought it was a bit shit.
Bettsj2 Posted 5 August 2013 Posted 5 August 2013 Put it on your chicken Make burgers finger lickin Reggae reggae sauce Ooh reggae reggae sauce Its just so nice Me have to name it twice Gimme some reggae reggae sauce Ooh reggae reggae sauce Can you imagine that on a Sunday? Didnt think so. Close thread.
Rincewind Posted 5 August 2013 Posted 5 August 2013 It even got a mention in the Independant. Only about 50 words though. Waste of typing space. Just said that visitors came from London, Birmingham and Nottingham. May have been more difficult for out of towners to attend on a Sunday. I think the Sunday is reserved for the winding down period. They have clear and pack things away and a little celebrating for the participants.
WhatsHisName Posted 5 August 2013 Author Posted 5 August 2013 . He was West Indian. He started at around 9am at The Burlington Ah the Burlington. I haven't been there in over 20 years -I've only been twice- but I remember it well If the Carnival was on a Sunday a LOT more would turn up to it. Just as there would be fewer peoole at the Notting Hill Ca\rnival if it was on a Saturday.
Parafox Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 Yeah I went. It's pretty good fun actually. Curiously the parade contained groups from Derby and Nottingham Caribbean groups. This year was particularly busy. The roads on the route are closed for about 4 hours. That's 0.045% of the year. What's the problem?
