Libertine Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 of course you need more than 2 centre backs, what happens if one gets injured or suspended who would come into replace them?I don't think Dublin will play at centre back again and you need cover and different options and you can't do this with only two centre backs in your squad 151314 Exactly.
lush Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 a) If that's his best available side he'll have to change it because it's got too many already documented weaknesses.b) No comment. c) (MDV) You won't need much money to replace deep freeze (Chambers plays in the Academy set-up and before you laugh would he or would he not score more goals than MDV?). d) (Growing money). Provalis (can go down as well as up). 151410 a, then dont slate him because its the best possible side and it didnt workout, wait till he plays HIS side. b, c, possibly, and im not laughing. Whats chambers attributes? d, ?
Libertine Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 Why have people changed there opinions on McCarthy all of a sudden? He was alot of peoples fav. player recently.

Louise Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 Why have people changed there opinions on McCarthy all of a sudden? He was alot of peoples fav. player recently. 151451 I have no idea, there are more urgent problems that emerged today than McCarthy (as said on the Wilcox thread) such as Douglas and our problems in front of goal.
Graz Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 Someone mentioned Chambers...correct me if I'm wrong...15 year olds can't play professional football. You have to be at least 16 to play for the senior side, and I was told Chambers doesn't turn 16 until March. We won't see him this season. McCarthy was good today I thought. Sheffield United have a good strike force, and he didn't look outplayed most of the game. We havn't got money or a suitable player in the reserves to replace De Vries at the moment, we have to make do with what we've got. Douglas made a big error today, but goalkeepers at this level will not be great. Norwich are lucky to have Robert Green still. Most teams in this league won't have a great keeper. We can't sign a Banks or Shilton, or even a Flowers, Keller or Walker, while we are in this division with very little money to offer. I hope the fact that it was the last 10 minutes that we lost the game won't destroy us too much with people saying "the last 2 years its been late goals costing us". It's a completely new team and staff, so that problem shouldn't still be here. Every team has a game or 2 when they lose to late, cruel goals. If the fans start thinking we're going to concede late again, we probably will because the players will feel the fans nerves. Everyone is so overreacting to this game. So many people turning against players, the team and the manager after just one game of the season, where we unlucky, and for 80 minutes a very good side. The reactions of some people to this game are mindblowing.

Perhaps we have been expecting a lot of him recently. In any case, he certainly is still my favourite player.

cisono Posted 6 August 2005 Posted 6 August 2005 McCarthy is better than Gerrbrand in my opinion. I would not have bothered buying Gerrbrand, but that's also because I did not know of his existence I expect that the will be selected in the future and that CL is simply using the best players for the job, given all the info available to him (which is most likely far superior to the amount and quality of info available to us).

So many people turning against players, the team and the manager after just one game of the season, where we unlucky, and for 80 minutes a very good side. The reactions of some people to this game are mindblowing. 151480 I've been "reacting" to some of the problems highlighted in this first game for months. I reacted because I hoped that, by the start of this season, we would have a decent strike force and we would have a potent attacking team. Others have pointed to the lack of a left back and questioned the competence of the goalkeeper. If these things haven't been addressed and I consider there are weaknesses in our team at goalkeeper, left back and centre-forward is there some reason I should wait til Christmas or whatever to mention them?. We did that last year and were not so far off going down. This year if they are not addressed I don't think we'll go down but equally I don't think we'll be challenging for promotion. And that seems to be one of the differences between me and a good many posters on this site. Far too many sound as if they'll be perfectly happy to finish ninth or tenth. Indeed, in some ways 9th/10th could represent progress and even I'd be fairly supportive if it was on the back of some exhillerating football and a commitment to attack. When the manager's job became vacant I wanted (and campaigned) for an approach which had us scoring goals, exciting the crowds, playing attacking, inspiring football. Now, what with Weso out, Chambers the victim of age discrimination and the club having no cash and a defence-minded manager (of a still leaking defence) I have accepted we're not going to have that this year. I'd just settle for doing something about the gaping weaknesses in our side so we might at least follow the plan and win a few 1-0. Just a question, thinking of the sheer havoc Sheffield caused whenever they broke into our invariably packed penalty box. How many clean sheets do you think Douglas will keep this season?. By all means ask the audience.
shen Posted 7 August 2005 Posted 7 August 2005 I expect Totte and Nissa to be the main pairing come Christmas. Paddy will get plenty of games as he'll be first choice backup. Let's not forget that Gerrbrand can play all along the back line though, so it could be that Gilbert will be pushed down the pecking order if it shows that he can't quite deliver on the flank.
Vo Rogue Posted 7 August 2005 Posted 7 August 2005 Its a terrible result to start the season. The fans preseason optimism knocked around a bit. However with Tiatto back this week , Hughes definately back within 2 weeks and Weso back in by mid to late November midfield will be considerably stronger and firstly taking pressure off our defense and secondly being able to more successfully provide attacking options to our forwards. Connolly will score more this season while MDV will lay the ball off for players like Sylla,Hughes and Weslowski to attack. A basic core was there yesterday and some nice football played.Hang in there Fans. Time for a little faith.

How many clean sheets do you think Douglas will keep this season?. 151536 yes we had a LB problem, now we have gilbert and sheehan. yes we had a goalie problem, now we have one who played Champions League last season, and is only playing championship football. yes there are a few that have said 10th is likely, but its what they want? I doubt it. From what i have read, CL is striving for a game plan to push the opposition back, keep them on the back foot for as long as poss. Doing that means we`ll eventually score. we`ll never play total football. I got the impression cl didnt wana instill his style of play last season too much, for fear of it losing all credibility. `defence-mindid`? we attacked more yesterday (with more flair) than in ANY one game last season, against the odds. give him reasonable time? We can only guess at clean sheets, but whatever goals we let in, wont be totally his fault.
Ric Flair Posted 8 August 2005 Posted 8 August 2005 I think it's great that we've got 3 centre halves with ability like Johnasson, McCarthy and Gerrbrand. Over 46 games, you need atleast that many defenders vying for places, add Dublin and Stearman too that and we're strong in defence. I'm not too worried about saturday's performance, it's the first time we've conceded 4 goals for over a year but i'd say our defence is stronger now than it has been for 2 years. Our biggest problem is whether we can take our chances, if de Vries continues to play like he is doing and Levein doesn't be brave and drop him then we'll shoot ourselves in the foot. Connolly in my opinion was class on saturday and looked a different player than last season. He'll get 20 this season with his eyes closed, what would be do for another finisher like him though. Stearman was brilliant aswell. Chin up, 3 points tomorrow otherwise there will be bother.

Ugarte would have been a brilliant free signing. <_<

Gené and Tonic Posted 8 August 2005 Posted 8 August 2005 So would CKR who went to Brighton. 152175 They had to pay for him I think but point taken.
Ric Flair Posted 8 August 2005 Posted 8 August 2005 They had to pay for him I think but point taken. 152213 I would rather us have used the £200,000 we spent on Gilbert on CKR.
supedaj Posted 8 August 2005 Posted 8 August 2005 agreed - we could have made do with our defensive cover - sheehan, tiatto, maybs, gerrbrand, johansson - we didnt really need another LB IMO. 200k on CKR would have been money spent much better... oh well .. )
