deanolegend1989 Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 The more I think about this season, the more I think we were actually very exciting. We have never been a free flowing attacking team, even under O Neil - a hard working strong team with a mean defence(Walsh/Elliot/Taggart & Lennon+Sav in front). Strong spine but not free flowing. This 03/04 year we almost always scored in every single game, often 3 and 4 goals in a ton of away games. We had potential to be a very decent side but didnt sign enough quality to cover for an ageing Elliot/Taggart. I blame Adams in a way but it was an entertaining season never the less. Best partnership? Collymore/Heskey - yes it was an incredible 5-2 win but it is silly to judge on a game or so, otherwise Zolt Lazcko would be up there with Messi & Ronaldo! Cottee & Heskey, now theres a different story. Class throughout and always on each others wave length, both have different strengths and it worked perfectly. Like I said before, dont like judging on 1 game but I remember the opening day of the season Vs the future treble winners..Heskey & Cottee tore the back 4 a new a*se that day..superb performance and at 2-0 should of won it...Never been so disapointed to hear Beckhams late leveller!
Sampson Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 Woah, woah, woah.... Heskey & Cottee and Heskey & Collymore (although short-lived) were both collectively and individually way better than Dickov & Ferdinand. Well in 03/04 Ferdinand and Dickov got 23 league goals between them (and Bent got a few too). We never had a season under O'Neill where our main strike-force scored more than that in the league. 23 were also scored by Heskey and Cottee in 99/2000. Not saying Heskey and Cottee wasn't great, but Dickov and Ferdinand was a really exciting, underrated and almost sadly forgotten strike force who played in a much weaker side and were feeding on much less with an inferior midfield, but were very clinical and created more themselves through Dickov's industry and Ferdinand's strength, power and ability to hold the ball up. I also think people also forget just how good Les Ferdinand was, even at the swansong of his career he was easily as good as Heskey or Cottee, in terms of his all round ability and being a complete striker he was probably better. Collymore was of course fantastic for 2 or 3 games but it's hard to judge the Heskey and Collymore strike force from the 1 game they played up front together and Collymore was pretty useless after his injury against Derby.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 Not sure how you can compare a side from the championship to a team in the Prem. We weren't usless in 03/04 by memory we dropped so many points late in every game. I will also love the 03/04 team as it was my first OS trip which was to Leicester and saw 8 games as a 17 yr old. Loved every minute of my month following city around.
Charnwood Norris Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 Les Ferdinand was top quality even at 37. His hold up play, aerial ability, touch, footballing brain were better than what we have today.
Dickov22 Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 The worst Leicester game I watched. Think Crouch got a hat trick if I remember correctly. Also remember a fair section of the Kop throwing their season tickets onto the pitch they were that disgusted. Didn't he break his leg at Derby? Yes horrifically. His foot was bent the wrong way!

Agree- Collymore was lazy. Les Ferdinand was fantastic for us for a short spell. Dickov in his first spell here was also an excellent player- like Vardy with slightly less pace but a better finisher. Cottee also did a great job for us.
Guest seanfox778 Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 I remember hearing if games finished after 80 mins we could've finished in a Champion's League spot! I remember Bent's goal at the Riverside was hilarious, their defended hoofing it 80ft in the air to Schwarzer who tried to control in and fell over with Bent getting a tap in. Dickov scored with his hand that game too, a blatant punch of the ball yet not one Boro player even realised haha
DennisNedry Posted 8 January 2014 Posted 8 January 2014 Dickov and Deane were a great duo in 02/03, much better than what we have now.
Guest Col city fan Posted 10 January 2014 Posted 10 January 2014 James Scowcroft played the right of midfield for the vast majority of his timefor us. The strikeforce of Dickov and Ferdinand was streets ahead what we have now and probably better than any other strikeforce we've had since Lineker and Smith (I certainly rate it higher than any we had under O'Neill as an actual strikeforce - not necessarily as individual players - and the goal tallies against the games played back that up especially when you consider our position in the league). Our current defence is better than that defence overall though, not sure about the midfield, the old side probably had better individuals (Izzet, McKinley) but the current one is more balanced and has more quality throughout. I thought Walker was better than Schemichel though. You are joking yes? Heskey/Claridge was better than the Dickov/ Sir Les combo
Sampson Posted 10 January 2014 Posted 10 January 2014 You are joking yes? Heskey/Claridge was better than the Dickov/ Sir Les combo No, not at all. I think just because they were in a lesser side people are happy to overlook how good the Dickov an Ferdinand partnership was. Again, they also scored as many goals as Heskey and Cottee ever did, in a weaker side and not playing every week (as they were rotated with Marcus Bent).
