A man is in hospital after being stabbed in the head and stomach in an attack in Leicester city centre this afternoon.

Shoppers and traders looked on in horror as the vicious assault took place at about 2.22pm in Granby Street.

Police said the 46-year-old victim has been taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, where he is undergoing treatment.

A 17-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Witnesses told the Mercury they saw two men arguing with a third man on the corner of Calais Hill.

The third man, who was standing in the doorway of Beaumont House block of flats, was then stabbed in the head with what looked like a knife or screwdriver, said witnesses.

The injured man then went inside the block of flats as the other two men made off, one of them on a bicycle.

Within a few minutes, police had cordoned off a large section of Granby Street.

No information about the condition if the injured man has been released.

Scenes of crime officers entered the flats and were seen leaving with bags of evidence.

Officers also collected the contents of nearby bins and began questioning people who live or work nearby.

Mitch Abbott, who works in the Barley Mow pub, just feet from where the attack took place, said he saw the incident unfold.

He said: “They were going at it and then one of them bent down to get his coat and other one thought it was finished and turned his back."

Mr Abbott said that was when the victim was stabbed.

“I think he got hit a few times," he said.

A shopkeeper who works nearby, and asked not to be named, said: “It was over really quickly, just a two minutes, but the guy got stabbed about six or seven times.

“He ran back inside the flat and the other two went off – one was on a bike.â€

Another Granby Street trader who asked not to be named said: “They were arguing. Then one guy got something like a knife and had quite a few goes at the other guy’s head.

“I saw him being wheeled out of the flats by paramedics and he had a mask on – he didn’t look very good and had blood all over his head.â€

The police cordon remained in place for about an hour.

Inspector Mick Edwards said: “We were called to reports of an assault in Granby Street. It’s still very early in our investigations and we’re in the process of trying to piece together what happened.â€

He urged anyone with any information about the incident who had not yet spoken to police to call them.

Insp Edwards said: “We are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, especially anyone who was in the Barley Mow Pub across the road from the scene of the incident around 2.22pm this afternoon.

“If you haven’t yet spoken with officers we would urge you to come forward. We would also like to speak to anyone who witnessed the events leading up to the incident. Any calls received will be treated in confidence.â€

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101, quoting incident number LEP-010214-0431, or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Just about to post it. Is that near the Barley Mow?

Considering it says it happened literally outside the barley mow, I would say yes.

next door to the Barley Mow.

I would have thought you might have come across the place through your voluntary work.  I think it used to be offices years ago & got converted into flats.  It's more like a hostel & the very bottom of any housing scheme.

It makes Benefits Street look like Park Lane..

Thought it was. Not really involved in the actual handling side of people. Don;t know which housing association Beaumont House belongs to, Never took much notice of it. The Plant is also close by and Calais Hill is a bit unsavoury area. Dover Castle not far too, Drop in Centre along Dover Street. Next street down.

Police have cordoned off a block of flats in Charles Street after reports of a man being stabbed.

Officers were called to Midland House, near Primark, at about 3.45pm today.

The victim, thought to be in his mid-20s, left a trail of blood along the pavement, from the block of flats to a neighbouring newsagent where he asked the owner for help.

Imran Mohammed, who runs the shop, said the man was in shock and gave him cloths to bandage the wound.

He said: “He was quite young, about mid-twenties and he came in holding arm and spraying blood everywhere.

“He showed me his arm and there was a wound about two or three inches long – and then I was just looking at his blood spraying all over the place.â€

Mr Mohammed called an ambulance and it arrived within a few minutes and paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to hospital.

Police cordoned off the flats and the pavement outside as they waited for forensics experts to arrive.

Officers could not confirm what had happened to the man, but said that no one had been arrested.

Head and stomach? Sounds like two of the worst places to be stabbed along with the testes and eyes. Hope he gets well soon.
