That's actually a good answer and i'd say it nearly fits the clue but "nails" isn't really a synonym for "reduces" , but your sort of looking at it the right way , There's a more obvious answer that fits the synonyms better.

For 10 - Nailstone? as an example , for the answer to be NAILSTONE , the clue might be something along the lines of; secure the weight ..........ie nail = secure and stone= weight or maybe to make it a little harder; the sound of scratchers...........ie. scratchers =nails + tone =the sound of it

Kicking myself now, I'm constantly using photoshop for editing things like that, and my knowledge of the county isnt the best but that's one of the few places I know quite well..

I went for Nailstone as i was thinking if you Nail something it would be reduced!

Its very much a "homophone" clue (we hear) rather than any connection, Smudge. You were sort of half right with your first answer edit; well done with the Kirby Bellars one btw , I thought that and Long Clawson were the hardest oh and this one too .
