leicesterChick Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 I suffer from really bad migraine headaches. When I get them nothing seems to help and they last for days at a time. Taking over the counter pain relievers used to work, but not any more. My doctor prescribed Zomig for my migraines. The medicine worked for about 6 months, but has now stopped. I am getting desperate for a solution. If any one out there can help me, it would be much appriciated.
Cat Burger Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 Gahhh! If your doctor can't help you I don't know who can.

Matt Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 I used to suffer from Migraines, and my mum as well, my mum doesn't seem to have many now, and I have had one in years (Touch wood) it was about 2 years the last one I had but before that I was lucky if I only had one a month! Hopefully (And it seems thi way) I have grown out of them, I think Migraines seem to be "triggered" by 'things' for me it was certain foods, I couldn't eat penny sweet, cheese, milk, alot of dairy products, e.t.c. I can get away with eating them now and I don't have any problems. I still have headaches often(ish) but i'll happily have the odd headache compared to the regular migraine!

It was suggested she cut out meat and become a vegetarian which she did and has never suffered seriously since. Forget the pharmacy drugs if you can. If what I say doesn't work see if you can find a natural remedy on the net. Good luck.

I know we have had this arguement before on this forum and I know everyone has there own views and opinions but I don't care what anyone says I can see that turning purly vegetarian is healthy Personally I should eat more veg, I hardly eat any veg because I simply do not like it, thats no excuse though because I will become very unhealthy if I don't start eating more veg, but how you can call turning/being vegetarian healthy I do not know. Turning veggy for your friend has obviously helped them and cured them, but surly just eating veg and cutting out all meat, causes problems in other ways/or even in the long term! Vegetarian =
Cat Burger Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 Vegetarian = I only eat carrots, I'm the same Matt. Hopefully I make up for it with the sheer volume of fruit that I eat.
Alexikokopops Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 I suggest you try and found out why you're getting all these migranes in the first place, I imagine there's something causing them which could be cut out if you get them a lot.
Katy Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 I used to get migraines due to the wierdest things. Foot spas, certain perfumes and thunder - strange. As for as a cure I could never find one, I had one the other day and just had to retire to bed with paracetamol until it went. I sympathise though and hope you find something that helps you.

Must be hard for you because the causes for your migraines are something you personally can't help(Thunder, other people prufume, can't really stop those things can you?!), As I said I have hopefully or what seems to have grown out of my migraines and the what used to cause my migraines I can now eat within reason. For people who don't know what Migraines feel like - Imagine the worst hangover ever, then go and bang your head on the wall as hard as you can...That doesn't even compare to a migraine!

I know what the foot spa thing is though, the vibration of it messes with the chemical balance (or inbalance) of my brain - another reason why I get sea sick. God im a nightmare
leicesterChick Posted 20 August 2005 Author Posted 20 August 2005 I thank you all for the suggestions. I have suffer from migraines since I was 10 (I'm 18 now). I hope that one of the things you have suggested will help. Any thing will be an improvement from how I feel right now.

How long did it take for her migraines to get better after she became a vegetarian?

I don't you ccould ever describe accurately what a migraine feels like.
Thracian Posted 20 August 2005 Posted 20 August 2005 Did cutting out meat really work for her? How exactly is cutting out meat supposed to help? How long did it take for her migraines to get better after she became a vegetarian? 159812 It certainly did and quickly too. Apparently meat contains something that frequently triggers migraines in certain people. Once the trigger is eliminated the problem disappears. The person concerned is 18 now so she seems to have suffered over the same sort of period as yourself. She insists that giving up on meat was a small price to pay for being rid of the misery of migraine. Hope it works for you.

In my case, it could have been due to pressure changes (as in flying a lot and scuba diving). The medication did not help with the migraine, it just helped me put on some weight. As to natural remedies, I have been recommended Feverfew (e.g. tablets): taken regularly, it reportedly reduces the number of attacks and their intensity. At least, I know a few people who swear by it. It is likely that you can do other things to help your situation: e.g. improving your diet, looking at how happy you are with your life, your current stress levels (e.g. reducing stress) and taking part in a suitable exercise programme. Also, have you ever been tested for "food allergies" (or intolerances)? If you have any questions, feel free to message me.

Maybe trying to cut out meat isn't a good idea. Is there any thing that seems to work well for you when you get a migraine?
Deathside Posted 21 August 2005 Posted 21 August 2005 Did cutting out meat really work for her? How exactly is cutting out meat supposed to help? How long did it take for her migraines to get better after she became a vegetarian? 159812 I've been vegetarian for nigh on 20 years - I didn't really have migranes before this and have only suffered them occasionally since (You have my sympathy if you suffering them on a regular basis - I can't think of many worse things) I'm not saying being veggie caused the migranes btw My frequency of migranes now is a lot less - maybe once or twice per year - They seemed to be at their most frequent when I was working nightshift - but that may well just be coincidence?

I just recently took a few long plane trips. It is possible the 2 migraines I have these past 3 days are from that. I am right there with you on the prescribed medicine doing nothing but making you gain weight. I stopped taking my medication, because it wasn't doing anything but making me plumper. I would consider it being very likely that I am having these recent attacks because I am stressed. I am quite stressed about my college courses this semester. I think it is likely that is playing a part in my current migraine attacks. Thanks for the advise though. I appreciate it a lot.
