Chris Smith lay in a hospital bed, dying of cancer

What advice would you have for this person?

I have fibromyalgia. My doctor won't diagnose it. I'm on a six month waiting list for rheumatology. I'm in constant pain. I'm being electrocuted from inside out on top of the pain and that's agony. I get confused. I go blank. My arms feel like lead weights. I'm worn out from it. I'm on job seekers but I had to leave my job thru ill health. Panic attacks. Depression. Fear of crowds and people. But was told I'm fit for work. I'm not. I'm not for to go out for a meal or fit to go to the cinema. I have been told I have to work in tesco for Christmas. For no wage either. I know I can't do this. Also I would be a health and safety risk for them. I'm terrified. What's going to happen to me. I'm going to be sanctioned and left penniless or try and do this work and get the sack from a job I'm not even being paid for. I'm ill and this pain is acute.

If it was your mother, wife or daughter would you tell her she had to do the work?

Its not all doom and gloom. A good ending to this story.

Thankyou to allow me to join.I am ex veteran of 22yrs in RAF.I have been involved with this ATOS evil. After our son died of cancer our doctor ordered me off driving, was coach driver at the time.So came off ,then thro series of tests with doctor, phsycologist ,i was classified unfit to work,my licences were removed by DVLA.Then had 28weeks sick pay, then onto jobseekers allowance,Then over time i had a couple visits with ATOS,once i had a tribunal, which i won on appeal. But since i have moved to isle of wight, and finally as state aged retirement. As i am over 65 am now on pension. So yes i am still having treatment,i am classed as with PTSD,and have chronic backpain, crippling, but assisted by morphine. But end of the day the whole thing was and is catastrophic, and ATOS didnt help. But now settled on IOW,our home, our family is here.Long story hope you did not mind.again thanks, speak soon.Mike.

I'd call him a liar reading the highlighted bits.

Not a bad effort though Rincey, I presume this is a the uncle of a bloke in the pub who knows a guy who knows a guy that someone you used to have a drink with played scrabbled with once? For tomorrow's Jackanory can you go for something a bit more summertime considering the weather is livening up?

I'm thinking a teenage lollipop man who now says he should be signed off until 2064 as a girl on a tricyle ran over his foot (make sure you get the date in term time), I think it's a goer at DNO4 (vibrant, diverse, fighting for the working man on JSA)

I never called him a liar. Matt asked for the link so he could respond personally. What he says to them is nothing to do with me.

Read the other responses to the post on the group page. They are actually trying to help instead of trying to find ways of making things worse for her.

you have read it and did not believe it. The condition is very hard to diagnose which is why the doctor is reluctant to make a decision. After her treatment it will be more certain. One or two of the replies have said they have it and recognise the symptoms. Do you want me to post the whole thread? About 30  replies.

Tim Swann Has your doctor told you specifically why s/he won't diagnose it? As you probably know, FM is notoriously difficult to diagnose, since there is no test that gives concrete evidence of the condition. Has s/he ruled out ME, MS and RA? Sounds like you sho...See More

People do develop illnesses as they get older. If she worked in a health care role for 30 years she would possibly be in her fifties. A time of life when the body immune system can start to slow down.

Do you want to meet her? No I don't.

A personal testomony not good enough?. Of course it isn't, that's why we have doctors, they diagnose us, we don't decide what we have got ourselves and then when refused benefits for it blame them, if I say I've got an illness that means I can't work, it doesn't mean it should be taken as gospel without any medical experts backing my opinion up and should be entitled to be paid by the state for doing nothing.

Why would you not believe it? Because at best it's clearly the rantings of someone who makes wild accusations about professional people doing a job or a load of unfounded accusations about working at Tescos for nothing etc that are untrue or at it's absolute worst it's a whine because her doctor won't sign her off on the sick.

Do you know her? No I don't, do you Ken?

Jeez, how many more threads are going to descend into arguments about the Welfare state and the people who claim the benefits??

OK I will leave it at that. Apart from obtaining medical records of this person I cannot do any more.

Who is affected?

Anyone can develop fibromyalgia, although it affects around seven times as many women as men. The condition typically develops between the ages of 30 and 50, but can occur in people of any age, including children and the elderly.

It's not clear exactly how many people are affected by fibromyalgia, although research has suggested that it could be a relatively common condition. Some estimates suggest nearly 1 in 20 people may be affected by fibromyalgia to some degree.

One of the main reasons it's not clear how many people are affected is because fibromyalgia can be a difficult condition to diagnose. There is no specific test for the condition, and the symptoms can be similar to a number of other conditions.

Looking at that group I think we might have caught one of your buddies from Panj Pani engaging in a bit of 'creative PR' with regards to his disibility. (whilst pulling the same angry Hector Salamanca face mind)

Here he is at the panj pani protest, clearly standing up with the aid of a small stick.

Yet at the disability cuts protest he seems to be wheelchair bound with tubes coming out of him (right of picture)??

He's in town, he's got shopping to do. Clearly he can't carry bags of clothing from John Lewis and hold a stick at the same time. The poor man would fall over.

I've spotted a young Leo Sayer in the background. Must be an old pic.

Though I'm confused now, because Bill Oddie is in the top pic...

Who are you talking about?

Anyway Matt did you go to New Parks school? Looked on Facebook and there is a MattP (ratt) No offence) I assume not because no mention of the City on his home page.

that is a walking frame Matt. He cannot use the wheelchair when there are steps or the door is too narrow. He can manage short distances very slowly then has to sit down. He knows some of the Radio One Deejays and been interested in it since Radio Caroline days. So being a radio presenter was perfect for him. Mobility scooters only get you so far before the battery needs charging up.
