The Value of Transfer Talk

Recommended Posts

Just a thought before I tackle the M-6 on the way to tonight's game.

The transfer talk section gets a lot of stick.  Some of this criticism is valid in my opinion, such as over-reactions to unsubstantiated rumours and verdicts on far-flung players delivered with absolute certainty of their validity.

But...if you just read one or a couple of news outlets, you would not be as up to date with developments as by reading every scrap that appears on transfer talk and comparing and contrasting opinions.

I'll give an example.

At around 11am the Mercury broke the story about a £5 million bid from Leicester for McArthur being rejected by Wigan.

http://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/Leicester-City-s-5m-bid-James-McArthur-rejected/story-22820279-detail/story.html?

It was later reported, as quoted from the Wigan chairman (Can't find this source right now)  that McArthur would be sold if the price was right as he wouldn't stand in the way of the player playing in the PL.

A few minutes ago, I read this.

http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/08/26/midlands-latest-5-million-leicester-bid-rejected-west-brom-newbo/?

The third source is reporting from earlier information, while not being as aware of all the developments as Leicester fans.  So while the conflicting reports can get confusing, in my opinion the transfer talk section is probably a useful tool in gleaning what information is available before many news sources do.

So long as it is used with discrimination and judgement that is !!

I've nothing against transfer talk, but I don't believe half the rumours in there. Like with every rumour, I believe the reliable and established sources, mainly Sky, BBC and John Percy, the rest I don't pay much attention to. People quote Daily Mail and the Sun, for example, who are about as reliable as asking someone in the street.

Well, not being in the UK and being 8 hours infront, its pretty useful when i get up in the morning to see if anything has happened rather than go to a myriad news sites.

But, it is on the interweb.. so i take it all with a grain of salt and only believe when its official.

In the final analysis, these rumors are in the main 95% 'hot air'. Best not to get to excited by anything you

read, as it will only serve to fry your brain. Since winning promotion, the recruitment process in relation

to squad 'additions' has, in my opinion, been very disappointing. Who is actually at fault for this, we may

never know.

With 5 days left until the window closes, I live in hope that some quality is brought in. We need it.
