So many drivers fail to indicate these days, so it would be a nice feature if the car exploded unless you had indeed indicated.

Fixed that for you.

it's amazing all these BMW's and range rovers that don't come with indicators

I'd much rather people indicate when they don't need to rather than not at all

True. I just think it shows how poor the quality of driving is, and how people rely on their cars and satnavs to tell them how to drive rather than thinking for themselves.

There could be a quite passive way of reminding drivers to indicate, draconian perhaps but I think it could work.

If you fail to indicate, the car issues a comment over the cars entertainment system along the lines of, Please consider other road users and pedestrians and signal your intentions .

If the driver transgresses again during the same journey, a second and final comment is issued that if this occurs for a third time, the cars entertainment system and climate control function will be disabled, adding, To reset, pullover when safe to do so, turn off the engine and wait 15 minutes.

Draconian as I say, but I think it might just do the trick in many cases.

On the subject of indicating, I'm seeing an increase of drivers indicating when then don't need to. Like when they reach a sharpish bend in the road. I assume its due to their sat nav showing an arrow and them assuming they are making a turn not just following the road and they aren't looking at the road they are driving on.

I've had that on my satnav too. You think there's a junction coming up and it's just a sharp bend.

Teslas do something similar when using the Autopilot system. You have to put a slight pressure on the steering wheel every 30s to show you are present and ready to take control if necessary.

If you don't do that it warns you audibly and visibly for 3 occasions, whilst flashing the screen red the final time. If you ignore it the final time then it completely disables the autopilot system mid-journey, and isn't available until the next time you drive the car.
