SystonFox Posted 28 August 2005 Posted 28 August 2005 right guys im kinda in a dilemma. when i was 16 i did my gcse's and left school to go to college for a year to study to be an electrician. i got all the qualifications i needed (city and guilds) and at the end of the year i wrote off to a number of companies to become an apprentice, i didnt get many interviews from this and when i did it came to nothing (1 company virtually said i had the job then 2 days b4 my last interview to meet the big boss they said they'd given the job to a family member of a worker...cnuts) so i decided to look for jobs to fill the gap. i finally got a job working a Euro Energy resources as a battery technician, this means building battery packs for medical and industrial use and i really enjoy my job as its a good location, decent pay and a good work atmosphere and everyone takes it easy there is never any real pressure unless a deadline is set. on friday i was contacted about a possible apprenticeship so i set up an interview for tuesday at 11am. thing is im meant to be at work on tuesday and its too short notice to take a days holiday, and the boss who was there last week is away this week, and the supervisor who was away last week is back this week so it means even if i do ask my supervisor for the day off he cant be sure as he doesnt know how busy we are or aren't as he wasnt here. now do i just pull a sickie and go to the interview as being an electrician is what i've wanted to get into since i was 16 or do i tell my supervisor the truth and that i have to go for this interview and maybe he will understand? if i pull a sickie what happens if i go to this interview, he asks 4 references and he rings my supervisor up and he finds out i skived off to go for an interview with someone else, not going to look good if it turns out i didnt get the job and i have to face my supervisor every day for the xxxx ammount of weeks / months whatever. i really want to do this interview with no hassle at all but because it was such short notice i feel i need to get in there a.s.a.p because if he see's someone before me he really likes they might nick it so i went for the 1st slot available (he said either 11am, 12:30pm or 2pm.) also the bloke who will be interviewing me i know his daughter from school all my life, and he knows my mum and my sister is mates with his son so its the kind of ideal situation as i could get on easy if i know people asits that kind of business really, not what you know its who you know. also it is within walking distance of my new home which is so much more convenient seeing as i am without a car atm. so sorry i have rambled on if anyone takes the time to read all that crap, cheers guys and girlies!!! thankyou. SF!

Rincewind Posted 28 August 2005 Posted 28 August 2005 I agree although I don't have much experience in changing jobs. If you just say you have been contacted out of the blue and you are curious as to what the other place can offer they should not stop you. As for referances your present company cannot say any bad about you. I don't think it will look too good if they find out at the interview or after that you skived off. The thought process is 'if he done it to them will he do it when working for us'
Hitesh Posted 28 August 2005 Posted 28 August 2005 Tell the truth. He/She should understand that this is a career move. I guess its easy saying it here, but you should just explain the situation as you have here. He/She wouldnt want to keep an unhappy worker if they cant go for other jobs. Just say that you will make up the time another day! Good luck with whatever happens! And i do hope you get that job!
Scarby Posted 28 August 2005 Posted 28 August 2005 I think you should tell the supervisor as well. Is there anyone that can cover for you/swap shifts?
Anish Posted 28 August 2005 Posted 28 August 2005 It's all well and good taking the high moral ground and asking the supervisor for permission, but he could easily deny you the holiday. I'd pull a sickie - this may be your one chance to do something that you really want to do. If you've been working at your workplace for a fairly long time and your supervisor is asked to give you a reference for this new job, do you think he's bitter enough to give you a crap reference because of one indiscretion? If he's a decent person and knows that you've done a good job while you've been working there I would expect him to disregard your sickie. After all, this is a big opportunity for you that you don't want to let pass by.
SystonFox Posted 29 August 2005 Author Posted 29 August 2005 cheers guys but i too am more leaning towards the sickie route as its easier at the current situation. i dont see why i would get bad references, i have only ever had 2 days off in nearly 11months of work and that was because i cricked my neck, even then i went in and tried to get on with it but i could hardly move. i am always on time and do alot of overtime. nobody can cover as we dont do shifts or anything just 8-4:30 each day. thanks for replies
