If you didn't go to Liverpool, you wouldn't believe the silence. Man United were shocking too, but at least there were about 1,500 (out of 75,000 I know) that made some noise.

The atmosphere at Anfield was absolutely unforgivable for any club in the top 3 divisions, never mind a team who are fighting to keep a European spot.

Totally agree, I was shocked by how poor it was.

Massive rise in 'tourist' fans at Anfield now, like at Man U and Arsenal.

As I have said many times before, I have been most disappointed with the demise of the atmosphere in the English leagues. Live football for me is not just about the football. It's the whole experience; meeting up with mates, having a pint, banter with the opposing fans, a heated, passionate atmosphere.

Don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate good football, I will literally watch all football put in front of me. To appreciate the nuances of the game, it is often best to watch it on TV. You get the best view of the action from every angle, you get replays and you can laugh at the so called experts.

Live football is a different thing all together. When abroad I will try to catch a game, I have caught games in different cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Paris. Sad to say, the atmosphere at English grounds has fallen way behind our mainland Europe brothers.

As we have all discussed on here before, it's now very difficult to change it.

Let's be brutally honest, it has been the gentrification of the 'football audience' that has resulted in the loss of atmosphere. This has been due to the cost of entry rising so rapidly. The make up of the crowd is much more family orientated and also middle class. I am not saying that is a good or bad thing for football, but it is why the atmosphere is not as good as it was in the past.

Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere at English grounds has never been of the organised 'ultra' type, co-ordinated, flag waving euro style. When the atmosphere was at its best in English grounds, it was a much more aggressive, vociferous form.

Personally, I don't want to head more towards the euro model as Palace have done (personal opinion). I wish we returned to the old style chants and songs (no drum for example).

But as I said, I sm sorry to say with the change in the make up of supporters ( eg the massive number of football tourists at Liverpool and Man U) I think the atmosphere at games will get worse.

Good post and an analysis that I agree with.

The problem is I think the only way to tackle how crowds have become is some form of organisation. Not necessarily European standard although that's the route a lot of mini groups are going up.

As a side note I wouldn't say UFS is ultra wannabe. A lot of people in it (myself included) have a lot of time for the ultra scene but I'm not convinced the idea is to turn it into an ultras section.

I dislike crowds that sing. Much rather concentrate on the game.

Same, can't abide that supporting nonsense.

I take your point, but I wouldn't necessarily agree that Europe are leading the way as I believe it all depends on who is playing, and who the opponents are.

I was at the recent Barcelona v Malaga game at the Camp Nou and despite there being close to 100,000 inside the ground the atmosphere was absolutely appalling. At times you could have heard a pin drop and I've witnessed far louder atmosphere's at lower league English clubs with a tenth of the crowd.

Villa are a prime example of a team who ordinarily are pretty poor, but when they can be bothered as we saw on Sunday can create an atmosphere. We are also guilty of this, and I clearly remember the season before last where we were pretty poor until we played Bolton at home with a few home games to go, and suddenly created some of the loudest noise I've experienced at our new ground both during the game and subsequent remaining games.

I don't think as a nation we've lost the ability to create noise, I just think we're becoming a lot more selective as fans in when we choose to increase the volume. This in my opinion is largely due to a changing demographic in supporters by comparison to days gone by, I.e. Less of a working man's sport, and an ageing population.

West ham away, Liverpool away, Man Utd away were all very poor. Whether it's down to 'day-trippers' or the fact they were playing little old Leicester, (or both) I don't know. Palace away were the best I've been to and I'd say Man City, Burnley and Palace (in that order) have had the best fans at the King power this season.
