Guest MattP Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 If you're travelling or in a different city totally acceptable, it's also ok on a summer's day whilst reading a paper or reading a book in a local village pub. In your own town it's an absolute no-no for me and wreaks of depression, loneliness and desperation.
Strokes Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 In my younger days I would often work away in cities over Europe, mainly uk though and would often venture out on my own. Rarely had any bother, excluding Glasgow, sidcup and Swansea (where I got a tooth knocked out). I couldn't see myself doing it in Leicester but I'm not sure why I would need too. Fair play to the OP, if you have a good night and get a bit of action, who can complain.
Rincewind Posted 16 March 2015 Posted 16 March 2015 One of my first holidays abroad was on my own in Austria (Seefeld) Around 1974. I lost my father the previous December and needed something different in my life. Since then I have had most holidays on my own but always met decent people to mix with when I needed to. Being on my own means I am not tied to a schedule set by someone else. I prefer to explore the place where I'm staying and not one for sitting on the beach or by a swimming pool all day. I tried the local bars and restaurants and mixed with the locals.

You're also not tied to a schedule if you go away with people that have mutual interests, with the added bonus that you can enjoy, experience and discuss it with them too.. As well as having someone to share the memories with in future

Mostly agree with this but only after distinguishing between 'going drinking' and 'getting a drink'. There's definitely extenuating circumstances for drinking in your own town. Nothing wrong with grabbing a swifty on your own after a long day at work for example. Yeah if youre going into town, hitting a few different places and getting pissed without really talking to anyone then you need to have a word. But going to your local alone and getting a few beers in with the assumption that someone you know will be there or turn up is reasonable enough.
srbfox Posted 17 March 2015 Posted 17 March 2015 Micheal Cane in Get Carter did it so it's could enough for me! I have lived all over the uk on my own for work and one of the first things I do is set yourself up with a local, get to know the people. As for going out out, why not? It's all about confidence. I've lost count the amount of times I've done it and met some great people and had great laughs. A few of them even came to my wedding. Unfortunately this day and age it's far more acceptable to sit behind a screen and meet people, there's nothing wrong with that but it's not actual social interaction. My view is grab your balls and get your face out there, what's the worest that could happen! Doesn't matter if it's your own town or not, who actually really gives a?
