Official "Politics Proper" Thread

Recommended Posts

After the interest for some of us in the French Elections, the British local elections and the upcoming US Elections I thought it would be a very interesting idea to open up a thread for all political discussions.

Please do use this for POLITICAL chat as some people are interested in the topic and there is nothing more annoying than spamming.

1st Topic: Upcoming French Parliamentary Elections.

If Segolene Royal manages to get the Socialist party a majority in the government then Sarkozy's power will be cut by 80% according to the France3 TV channel. This would then be very interesting as it would almost be as if Segolene had actually won the election altogether!

the upcoming US Elections

This November, only three states will be electing governors, four states will have elections for their state legislatures and five major cities will be voting for their mayors.

He probably meant the 2008 Presidential which will capture the minds of the press for the next 18 months.

Or at least the next 12 months starting in November. ;)

If you watch NBC's "Meet The Press" Tim Russert has been interviewing some candidates for weeks.

Hillary Clinton, Barak Obama and John Edwards I think will finish in that order for the Democrats and Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney for the GOP. Mind you I never thought Bush would get re-elected so what the hell do I know............except I do lay to claim that I watched Clinton on C-Span two years before the election and said that man will be President one day; no one else had ever heard of him.

A "popular" magazine here in Canada (Maclean's) was bigging up Obama. They fancy him for a shot at the big time.

But, I can't see it happening myself. Partly because I don't think he'll be the Democrat in the race, but mostly because Maclean's thinks he might be the one. If they think he's the one, I definitely do not. ^_^

Yes, I was talking about the 2008 Presidential Elections. Who do you think will take the Democrats leadership? I fancy Hillary Clinton to get it myself... simply cause she's got more money in the election bank and contacts and people know her more than anyone else really.

I fancy Hillary Clinton

That's not the kinda thing most people admit to! :D

I think she'll get the Democrat nomination, though. So far, she's looking good for the nomination. I have doubts about her ability to beat McCain or Giuliani should either of them get the nod from the Republicans, though.

I knew someone would eventually say something like that... honestly I didn't mean it like that! Segolene is much more my style! lol

Anyway, Hillary has got a chance to win it... though as you say, whether she will win it overall is another matter.

There's a long way to go but McCain is neither arsehole nor watercress at this time. He was the one Republican who was campaingning for change. He has been towing the line for some while now and has aligned himself with Gerorge on the continuation with the war; not a good political move.

Several Republican congressmen had a "come to Jesus meeting" with GW last week amd the story goes that it wasn't pretty. I suspect he'll be doing a slow turn around now; the surge aint working and they're tired of not being told the truth. The meeting prompted a fast trip by Cheney to Iraq where he told the Parliament there that none of them are going on a summer hols while our soldiers are dying every week.

This is Smudge returning you back to the studio.........."Trevor"

Trevor gets all the girls. I think it's his gingery locks and funny hat. And miniature chinchilla. ^_^

What's your take on Giuliani and Romney - the two other 'frontrunners' for the Republicans? (At least I think they're the two other frontrunners).

In the same crappy ("popular") magazine that bigged up Obama, they suggested that Giuliani might suffer because of this and that (I forget what exactly 'this' and 'that' were). Oddly, they said nothing of the other bloke. lol

Don't get me started about ginger............me nuts lost today.

Giuliani has "legs" insofaras he managed NYC brilliantly culminating in the the way he handled 9/11, however, he has baggage......3 wives and who knows what might come out of the closet later in the race. Romney is a bit of a glamor boy and seems to say whatever anyone wants him to. Speaking to the NRA he publicly stated that he had been a hunter since a boy, turns out that he has been hunting twice. My daughter lives near Boston and has a very low opinion of "Teflon Romney" who was the Governor of Massachusetts.

Candidates

Apropos my comment about George doing a slow turn it was interesting to hear today that he had heard persuasive arguments from both sides of the House that "benchmarks" were necessary for the continuing protection of Iraq..........Methinks General Petraeus is going to have a rough time the next time he appears before the Senate Armed Services Committee...........

i hope Condaleeza Rice stands for the republicans. a black female of dubious sexuallity . the liberal do-gooders won't know who to vote for. :D

Neither will the white right-wing rednecks who make up 90% of the Republican vote.

But it won't matter who they put up in 2008. Unless they fiddle the voting system even more than they did in the last two elections, the Democrats will walk it!

  • Bold type 1..............I hope that is hyperbole :nono: .
  • Bold type 2..............I wouldn't be too sure, I never dreamt Bush would get re-elected until the Dems shot themselves in the foot by nominating Kerry to carry them forward. This time the Democrats have Clinton x 2 which is a strong team but I'm not sure America is ready for a woman and even yet an African American. For the ladies and people of colour that is not my opinion but that which I think Americans feel. The war will probably still be with us and terrorism will be the same or worse. Giulliani will certainly be well placed to secure the "Afraid Vote". If there's another 9/11 he will be a shoe-in unless his background has skeletons yet to appear. He also has quite centralist views on abortion so may carry the undecided. Very early days yet.

I loved the 2004 elections.

A group of us had discussed it, a good couple of months before the election... they were claiming even then, that the Democrat Kerry would clean the floor with Bush and take office in January. I said "not so fast". Outnumbered 7 to 1, I was delighted to have the last laugh that fateful November afternoon, when the news broke that Kerry had conceded defeat.

These silly Canadians assumed that their view of America would be similar to that of the Americans' view of America - so they figured if 80+% of Canadians wanted Bush out/Kerry In, then surely America will elect Kerry. Whoops Canadians.

I was really surprised but actually quite pleased... I was on holiday in France and rushed to the car to turn the radio on to here the result and they said that Bush had won! Didn't really know why I was pleased... just wanted to see more stupidity...

  • 1 month later...

So we now have a new Prime Minister... Gordon Brown takes over from the legend that was Tony Blair...

Can't say that he inspires me with much confidence... always looks very much out of place at large gatherings and meetings with high profile people... I guess that will come with experience and time in the job.
