People in Russia and China like to blame their social problems on outside interference too.
-
Lack of trust in the police is also a contributing factor and probably worth focussing on as much as social media, which is more convenient to blame.
-
I don't think this is necessarily true about politicians and the media but it might be true about the general public. Saving face is very important in Britain.

Been ages since I watched him but can remember thinking at the time the historical events he discusses are really underexplored and used quite superficially, as enjoyable as his films are. I also felt like his argument (simplifying here but basically people are manipulated through their consumption of media narratives on things they don't understand) kind of defeated himself if you know what I mean? Maybe that's deliberate and it's all too postmodern and meta for me.

Brexit voters in 2024 watching immigration increase after specifically arguing in 2016 for liberalising immigration controls on non EU countries: This_is_the_one_thing_we_didn_t_want_to_happen.mp4

Bosnia is maybe my favourite European country. And that trip from the Croatian coast to Mostar is incredible. Only went to Dubrovnik once back in 2007 and got an apartment and balcony for basically £10 a night, that was when old ladies would meet tourists off buses with signs offering rooms. Dunno if that's a thing anymore. Watched Liverpool lose the European cup final sipping ice cold beer with a view over Lapad and the islands. Salad days.

No I mean that migration flow from the EU is now negative, i.e. more Europeans are leaving than coming. When as those stats show they were the most beneficial to the UK. Although personally I don't think migration should be presented solely as an economic issue.
-
Ah the long 20th century! Like Sampson I think 2008 is probably a more logical end point but I think you could also argue for 2016, 2020 and the pandemic, or even 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine.
-
This shows that migrants from Europe have a more positive fiscal impact. And migration from the EU is now net negative.

Walking through Baker Street underground station like a 6th century Saxon in Britain gawping at the crumbling ruins of a superior civilization.

I think it's been obvious for a while that the problem with social media is conflict and radicalization much more than 'misinformation'. Which leads to people treating elections or referenda like football matches where winning is all that matters, even if what they win makes them worse off.

Off to Puglia in early September. Going to hire bikes and try and explore villages and sights off the beaten track. And eat lots of fish.
-
Probably my most reactionary belief is that some people are just irredeemably evil.
-
Yeah I'm sure it is. Similar to some extent in education. It's an interesting debate but not the best time to have it tonight

This is not a comment on Southport as obviously we don't know the details yet but I find it very hard to believe we need immigration on the scale of the last 2/3 years to keep the economy afloat. If we do, we are ****ed beyond belief. As for solutions, there's a big trade block just off the coast of Kent where apparently highly skilled and educated people can move about freely...

Twitter was and often still is very good. There are thousands upon thousands of really interesting accounts sharing fantastic stuff. Unfortunately it's getting harder to ignore the sociopaths and bots.
-
It happens more in some countries than others though. There must be reasons why that is, societal and political differences in countries with higher and lower rates of violent crime and murder. Difficult to say now obviously because we don't have a lot of details. But I hope when the facts are known we can have an honest discussion about why as a society we seem to be experiencing more incidents like this beyond simply 'mental health'.
-
do whatever countries where this doesn't happen do, I guess
-
Probably grill them later

Two confirmed dead. ****.
-
They haven't already? I think Brits have been quite complacent to be honest that our society will remain relatively prosperous and peaceful when most of the signs point to the opposite.
-
Ah yes. Glad you enjoyed it. Cefalu is beautiful. I was in Levanzo last year and we found a little beach with the water full of medusi. Hundreds of em.
-
I'd suggest maybe not. My Dad still breaks down in tears when I remind him of his attempts to navigate Palermo's ring roads.
