    The Weather

It's telling that people in the UK are now so inconvenienced by excess heat events that the above discussions are taking place on the regular.
  2. Already looks like the only two positive outcomes for England here are winning by batting once and racking up a truly monster total, or at least matching the first innings total and rolling on to the draw.
  3. On topic: tree rings can also tell us about emissions that have made it to the stratosphere through the aforementioned temperature variables, thus providing a solid (though limited in its own way indirect) method.
  4. It's a fair argument. I guess we'll find out what subsequent studies show. In any case, I think the impact human activity has had on various emissions and the biosphere since the Industrial Revolution is really not in question.
  5. No idea. No other route to that other that the obvious one because he's clearly not getting impeached, so I guess 20's given his general health?
  6. I think as long as you have legit records to draw from, using models that apply them is OK. And yes, it's obvious that the more scientific agencies doing good work stay out the way of the death-worshipping fundies, the better.
  7. Probably not, unless something happens that either completely removes Trump from play or he somehow manages to neutralise the cult of personality around him.
  8. https://phys.org/news/2025-06-human-stratospheric-cooling-early.amp More (rather darkly) fascinating stuff from Phys.org. It really is a great resource for information on this topic.

20 years in the UK, more likely.

    The Weather

Tropical or subtropical climates of any kind are utterly brutal in summer with the humidity. See most of Asia.
  11. And it will have a knock on effect for NASA, as well. Here's hoping they can get back on track soon.
  12. They're really having trouble scaling up the complexity of the designs, it would seem.
  13. You'd think at least one match wouldn't have enough play for that three days over the course of an English summer, yeah. So 3-1 England or possibly 2-2.
  14. Shame about Evans, but hopefully Jack will carry the flag further.
  15. Same with the patent for the polio vaccine. Sometimes, a great discovery is (at least initially) altruistically used.
  16. Perhaps the UK can find something in between what it has now and the Chinese solution. Perhaps the Korean KTX model?
  17. https://phys.org/news/2025-06-plastics-threaten-ecosystems-human-health.html Western figures of a particular type.... https://phys.org/news/2025-06-tracking-planet-real-china-high.html ... and China. Which, exactly, is the better bet towards guaranteeing the future of the biosphere going into the future?
  18. https://phys.org/news/2025-06-heatstroke-issued-japan-temperatures-surge.html https://phys.org/news/2025-06-extreme-hot-weather-episodes-today.html The usual.
  19. Queens when the weather is good is a lovely watch. Hopefully the Danimal can turn this one around.
  20. See also: a variety of different scientific matters.
  21. Good bowling attack v good batting lineup and shaky bowling attack v shaky batting lineup. Think home advantage will tell for England, but the only guarantee I would think is that as long as every Test is more than three days long, there will be results.
  22. It's fvcking amazing what autocorrect will come up with, isn't it? That was supposed to be "before" - now corrected.
  23. I think a lot of the world has caught onto the pattern and isn't interested in offering any kind of support for it now, either. NB. I would add as a point of order before anyone nitpicks your post that the US hasn't killed many, if any more than a handful, of Iranian nationals in this latest round of foolhardiness - yet.
