  2. Yeah. Given the problems have been talked about ad infinitum here I thought talking solutions would be better, but it seems that they are thin on the ground.
  3. And as has been said before, people prefer a human shaped monster like Putin to unite against, rather than a threat that appears abstract to them. Doesn't stop it being the bigger threat, though.
  4. You're right, but what should those tactics be that will get the job done in the timeframe needed? Damned if I know.
  5. Adaptation and maintenance are fine, I just don't see the point of additional buildup. And yes, there will be a shed load of fighting over diminishing resources of things play out the way they are projected to re Climate change, so it might - just maybe - be a good idea to take the necessary steps to make sure that doesn't happen, rather than simply assuming that it will and the deaths of a great many people are an inevitability? NB. Feel free to check back in the CC thread in your own time if you have anything to add.
  6. But with respect to discussion elsewhere... When the book is written of how civilisation fvcked up, both JSO and those who were too proud or complacent to look past them and see the issue they highlight will take an equal share of the blame.
  7. ... it might not be immediately helpful for them, but it might be useful for them to note that their experiences aren't the experiences of everyone else, and so perhaps shouldn't be treated as gospel and/or factored into policymaking each time. Perspective beyond one's line of sight is important and more people should really grasp that. IMO there's not a legit outcome where that happens unless all of NATO suddenly decide they're not going to use their nuclear weapons when the situation calls for them to do so. Conventional military increase on what the UK has now doesn't make much sense - who are the UK going to fight now that they couldn't beat with what currently exists and don't have WMDs with which to respond?
  8. Nah, just what the media liked to print. Personally, I reckon being the first guy to win an ATP title after having an entirely new shiny hip isn't bad, really. Just a shame the problems happened to manifest right when he was leading things at the end of 2016.
  9. Morgan Freeman narrating: "It was not, in fact, close."
  10. Because... Firstly, we've barely crossed the 1.5 degree threshold at the moment (and that is the point by which some of the "mildly nasty" consequences might be averted), but we shall cross it in full on the bar l near future and probably won't stop there (more likely closer to a 2.5 to 3 degree increase). And secondly, we've barely begun to taste the consequences of such an increase at the present time...but we've seen how disruptive even the smaller effects of the beginning of a smaller increase can be, and they will follow in due course. What you're saying isn't cynical, I don't think, but it is remarkably complacent and relying on civilisation to pull a rabbit out of the hat at the last minute to save countless millions, perhaps billions, of lives when there's absolutely no reason to suggest that they can, given the scale of the consequences that may follow.
  11. Thank you for the clarification, certainly agree there. It's very unfortunate.
  12. Perhaps a little more differentiation is called for then - this is weather being driven by climate, because those heat domes, wherever they are turning up, are more extreme in terms of effect than they have ever been, and that is irrefutably down to increased global average temperatures.
  13. 'Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.' - Albert Einstein. Who'd be a science communicator, these days?
  14. https://m-en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20240619003252315 Record temperatures in Asia... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv224v27n13o ... and across North America.
  15. I can't hear anything, but my dog is going nuts.
  16. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cw44mdee0zzo Incompetence in working towards an objective that needs to be achieved is annoying. JSO are incompetent.
  17. Has to retire hurt five games into the next match.
  18. If it is, when it comes to matters that don't just concern a single person, then it shouldn't be - though of course it depends on how that disappointment is expressed. Dealing with adversity maturely is a key part of being human imo. For what it's worth, I'm underwhelmed, but I'm certainly not going to rush to conclusively judge, there would be no sense in that.
  19. Yeah, but then an additional overhead will be personal protection experts just in case they decide you're a whistle-blower and send their own "experts" after you...
  20. At least equally self interested previous generations, if there were any, had the excuse of ignorance regarding their effect on the future. Current generations do not.
  21. What the Koreans have done with roughly an equivalent population to the UK in about a tenth of the available living space is remarkable, really. In a relatively short time, too.
  22. In theory, that's the way things should work. In practice, there's another complication with the fact that these days Farage and those like him can exert a lot of influence over those "issues" and what people think and "need" without having to win at the ballot box at all. So that's an additional complication, even though the elected government really does need to do better.
  23. But they're smart enough to dress it up as "France-style" to hide the slippery slope to it.
  24. Absolutely, that would be the best thing in an ideal world - people making such decisions not based on demographic prejudices. Maybe one day we'll actually live in one. In other news, more Portugal shithousing.
  25. Portugal shithousing again - quelle surprise. This might be overly egalitarian of me, but perhaps simply the best commentators for the highest level games - no matter which gender they are, perhaps? Or perhaps it isn't possible to give all demographics an equal shot in such things. Who knows - it certainly hasn't been the case historically.
