  1. Lots of discussion WRT energy policy on the news today. It really shouldn't be a discussion, though. The equation is simple - either pay more to get the necessary infrastructure in and get foreign policy in place to facilitate other nations to do the same... or pay much more, in lives and money, in the future, and be remembered in infamy as responsible for that cost by every single generation thereafter.
  2. I would submit that is at least mostly in response to comments made about her race. And her gender, too. Don't disagree there are likely a hundred better black female pundits out there though and the Beeb could do much better in terms of standard.
  3. Yep, I agree. It's an extension of the same fallacy. "Those people deserve to suffer, because they are Bad, and those same things will never happen to me, because I'm Good." How ridiculous does that sound? But people, many people, buy into it.
  4. Because some people genuinely buy into the Just World Fallacy so much that they think these people somehow have earned the right to suffer further. They believe that the world has arranged it so that their own lives deserve to be (relatively) comfortable and privileged because of how they've acted, and that others deserve suffering and misery because of how they have acted, and are happy to act as agents to facilitate it. I have similar thoughts when I hear about people who simply do not care about people beyond their line of sight either spatially or temporally. I just want someone to explain the mentality in a way that doesn't sound like utter sociopathy.
  5. And sadly, same consequences for certain demographics now and for everyone later.
  6. Expectation of similar behaviours when variables have changed in ways that can't really be analysed (as is the case with this England team against past England teams and a lot of other situations) is, sadly illogical. It's the Monte Carlo Fallacy (I think). The truth is, we have no way of really knowing how England will do in this tournament (and when they fetch up against "better" opposition) and I think it's best to qualify those remarks tbh.
  7. I think that's OK tbh. England football fans have illogical self-deprecation practically built-in, and the tournament history certainly helps reinforce that. I wonder who the first name out of the hat in that regard who would actually take the job would be?
  8. ...did England win 1-0 or lose 3-0? Honestly unsure judging by the running commentary. Take the win, move on.
  9. .... is this a Daily Mash article in disguise?
  10. The Oz game was the only real blip though and England dealt with Oman and Namibia better than Scotland did, that's why they went through. Honestly I think this is a pretty open tournament given the results so far, and England have a good a shot as anyone bar the Aussies and possibly India.
  11. I think that's likely, but so long as at least one of them isn't a bot, that's obviously no reason not to take stuff like this with the seriousness it deserves. Could also be edgelord trolls saying something horrible for the sake of causing the trouble they thrive off and they don't actually "mean it"... still no excuse.
  12. Well, that total is certainly enough. Now to hope for at least 5 Namibia overs and there's no washout in the Scotland-Oz game.
  13. I'm pretty sure that bots play a big part there, but then that's irrelevant, it appears the same to the casual observer either way. Not good.
  14. Deeply frustrating now the damage is done. And that misinformation when manipulated by the media and presented to wide ranges of the public is most damaging.
  15. That's a damn good point, really. That being said, I think I can trace mistrust in scientific matters and its effect on policymaking on a large scale back to the middle of the last decade and the explosion of social media and "independent" media sources at that time.
  16. By and large, they're not, if news reports are anything to go by. Things are changing.
  17. Yep. But then it's the "good guys" striking a blow against the "Evil Empire" and so it's acceptable... .... right?
  18. Yep. And now you understand the difficulty and frustration (to say nothing of fear) science communicators have had when he and those of his mindset say practically anything about science related policy.
  19. This has been true since 2016 and likely before tbh. Social media and the siloing it allows has subverted the very idea of truth. "Alternative facts" and all that. I think it's obvious how hugely damaging it can be when that leaks into policymaking on a few different matters.
  20. Unkel did well in the Scotland Germany game yesterday, think ITV completely sold her out there with switching to her, no sound, and then switching again a minute later and giving her about five seconds to make her point. On the game itself, good to see Croatia looking to win me the booby prize in the work sweepstake
  21. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj55v57v2z2o "A judge ordered the liquidation of Infowars host Alex Jones' personal assets, clearing the way for potential payouts to families of the victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook mass shooting." My. Into. Veins. It. Inject. Rearrange as needed.

    When Taken

Bugger! I thought the photos were entirely randomised or at least there was enough of them they wouldn't be used more than once. I'll edit.
  23. I'll be honest, I think this way because I've seen how such ideologies take root elsewhere and how effective social media is at planting them (I think it's a game-changer), and quite frankly I worry a lot about the consequences if they gain enough traction because it's obvious how terribly severe they will be, even if the risk is low. I really hope you're right, because the powers that govern the Universe help us all if you're not.
