To me it looked like a "we'll pay you X after Y amount of PL squad appearances" He ended up on 9, guesswork being 10 would have triggered a bigger fee, which we were probably though is not worth it, but couldn't send him back. If he can stay fit.... big ask, yeah, he could be a cheap option capable of playing the role Martì would find desirable. I'm not against it under the right circumstances.

Can see him leaving this time, has been more of a squad player for a while now and massively exposed in the Prem this year. Would like to think it signals Ricardo staying as first choice, Hamza and Coulibaly as the alternate options, with Thomas and probably a loan for LB. Last year £5m - £7m probably enough as he'll be on a decent wage and wouldn't be in the starting 11 right now.

The big twats in league one and Barry Brian guru Nanak will do us a favour in return for say... Wanya Marcal on loan. £3m - £5m max with a sell on.

I reckon that his new deal had some weak relegation wage reduction in it so that he's quite likely our highest earner now and that £9m joke of a release clause being very publicly is just his get out clause if a club matches wages good enough to make him relocate. Can imagine he's very settled here and if a Villa, Spursy, Man U come along he's off, otherwise it'll need to be very good offer from Europe. Think it'll be a while as he'll weigh up all offers
